    Great content
Love the topic choices, length of episodes (long enough to bring out key aspects of subject matter, without going into the weeds for those like me who are still not too knowledgeable about the period), and the pace of delivery. (You would want to say “diminish”, not “mitigate” when you were making a joke about Gutenberg showing “mercy” to his adversary in one of his litigations, there in episode 100.)

    Tedious
And oddly entertaining podcast that is well researched, but ultimately becomes tedious. The source material for this period is mostly obscure, while the constant analysis of etymology and such doesn’t make for a compelling listening.

    Fascinating and Calming
I love this podcast so much. It’s both fascinating and calming. I listen several times to each episode. I’m happy as soon as I hear the odd, beautiful electro-medieval opening music and the audio detail behind the narrative throughout the episode makes it that much more engrossing.

    Nice
I came across this looking for more information on Gerald of Wales. I listened to several episodes. Great stuff. Appreciate the breakdown of words and their roots. So much cool stuff newly lost to time in these old texts.

    Absolute Gem
This is one of the best podcasts around. Other than he spends way too much time defending the Hebraics from mean medieval writers. Like they don’t need your help dude, we get constantly propagandized about how good and wonderful they are everywhere every day.

    So good
If you’re looking for obscure medieval texts with some awesome analysis, this is the podcast for you! Been a follower for a long time and I always learn something new. Also Patrick has a lovely tembre to his voice and is so eloquent; if you’re even reading this now, you’d be remiss not to check it out. Scroll the episode titles to find one that piques your interest and fire away; I promise you will find it interesting!

Rarely updating, but the back catalog is still worth checking out. Thank you for sharing these texts with us, Patrick! I like that you provide interesting analysis while still keeping the episodes a reasonable length.

One of the Best History Podcasts
Patrick, Thanks for your show! I appreciate all the background you give to each text. It really helps to set the context and give the text its meaning. Whatever subject you turn to, I end up learning more than I would have thought. Bene studeas!

    Death Trip
What was wrong with me the day I decided to give away my copy of Wisconsin Death Trip? Ah, well. Finding this podcast has been a blessing. I don’t believe in an afterlife or reincarnation, but I would be supremely happy to spend the hereafter studying medieval manuscripts and hanging out with scholars like this gentleman.

    Excellent Show
Patrick provides a unique view into a very interesting and underserved piece of history. He presents readings from first hand accounts of Medieval life and times, representing all walks of life and a wide variety of situations. He then interprets and offers insight into the readings as well as the books and libraries that contain them. Truly a diverse and entertaining program.

    Absolutely Delightful
I love! this! podcast!!! It’s amazing, informative, and incredibly enjoyable. The readings from the texts themselves are lovely and are accompanied by tbh the most well done and immersive soundscape I’ve ever had the pleasure of listening to in any podcast. Which combined with the analysis and discussion of the text as well the historical context provided for them, which I find just as enjoyable as the readings themselves, easily makes this one of my absolute favorite podcasts. Each episode is a delight and there’s just something incredibly charming about the entire podcast. The amount of effort, research, enthusiasm, and passion put into every episode really shines through and makes this podcast a wonderful listen, I cannot recommend it enough.

    Wonderful
Medieval texts provide a unique window into that era. This is the first time that I have even heard of most of them. I thoroughly enjoy every episode.

    Informative, interesting and amusing
Patrick finds interesting examples of medieval texts and provides quality commentary, analysis and context. Allows me to get my medievalist fix even though undergrad is long in my rear view mirror. I like it enough to support it on Patreon. Keep up the good work!

The BEST Podcast for Medieval History
Excellent podcast! The host combines medieval readings with thoughtful observations, breaking down complicated texts in a way that almost anyone can understand. He has a relaxed, pleasant delivery, and uses sounds effects to create an almost radio show-like experience.

    I never skip an episode!
This podcast is so wonderful, I never skip over an episode! The research is thorough, the readings well done, and the explanations elucidating. This is someone who is clearly passionate about medieval history and primary sources. This podcast reminds me of all the bits and pieces that got me interested in mediveal studies in the first place.

    Engaging history podcast
Truly fascinating history, well researched, entertaining, and with a host that doesn't do long off topic rambles.

    Great Source
An excellent source for commentary on Medieval chronicles, particularly English. Entertaining as well as informative, I always eaderly look forward to the next episode.

I love it and it inspired me to start my own podcast focused on the medieval period.

This podcast deserves to be better known
What an excellent way to investigate history. First hand accounts paired with well-researched commentary. The episode on patronage shows how history can provide a new perspective on modern society. Give it a try even if you’re not excited about medieval history.
  • TracksideScience
    Excellent!
This is a great podcast even if, like me, you're knowledge of medieval literature is Chaucer and.. I think Beowulf?.. anyhow - it doesn't matter, he brings these texts to life and I always come away understanding a little (and sometimes a lot) more about medieval history.

    Unique and wonderul
Medieval Death Trip is a truly unique and wonderful podcast. As another reviewer mentioned, most history podcasts give broad overviews of names, dates and events. There are plenty of all three in this podcast, but the approach here is more small-scale, with emphasis on the viewpoints and perspectives of contemporary writers and their audiences. Medieval Death Trip has a great balance between commentary and source material, and both are very interesting, with great narration and production.

    Wondrous Medieval Content
I recently discovered this podcast and am head over heels enjoying it. As an author of novels set during the Middle Ages, the content inspires my writing. Well delivered, interesting, and entertaining. Thank you!

    Fantastic!
This is a great podcast. To begin with, the production values are wonderful, the host really knows his subject and enjoys presenting it, and the stories are fascinating. It has also led me to a number of other really great historical podcasts. If you love history, you’ll love this podcast, and if you don’t love history, I am sorry for you.
  • katenmkate
    Love it!
My complaint, one-and-only complaint, is there are too few episodes. More! Please! Really!
  • P cypher
    Get to the point
You say let me jump right in ... then it takes you 7 min to start the story ... get to the story already we don't wanna here that extra rambling
  • yhwhymlk
    Wow
I honestly can't believe I didn't know about this podcast until now. My new favorite podcast. Love the creepy theme music, and the heavy focus on simply reading the primary texts is something that needs to be done for other periods and cultures as well. The commentary on the texts is 11/10.
  • Jaisjsnak
lots of fun a great introduction
lots of fun - a great introduction to something that would otherwise have been very difficult to get into - thanky you and keep them coming

    Outstanding!
One of my favorite history podcasts. Primary sources (medieval chronicles, etc) expertly read and interpreted for the layperson like me. Like the college course you wish were available! Funny, entertaining, wide-ranging. Can't get enough. Thanks!

Fantastic, fun podcast looking at medieval texts
name says it all. It's an interesting podcast which provides you fun stories ripped directly from often hard to access (or at least hard to know where to look) medieval sources with plenty of great context provided. I wish I had found this months ago.

    Best Medieval Podcast
Patrick Lane presents an interesting and entertaining look at the strange and odd (from a modern perspective) found in Medieval manuscript sources. Medieval Death Trip is a wonderful blend of source material, context, and commentary from the podcast's author. If you're interested in the Medieval time period in any fashion this podcast is, in my mind, the best you'll find that blends insight and entertainment into a wonderful sub-30 minute experience.

    Excellent!
Give this podcast a listen and you won't be disappointed. It's a glimpse into the past in the most entertaining way.

    ^^^ Yeah, what they said
Enjoying this podcast. Haven't guessed a riddle correctly yet.
  • crypticthree
    truly original
Quality history podcasts are not that common, and most of them deal with “the big picture.” This refreshingly original podcast looks at the details and uncovers the devil therein.
  • leonardsmalls
    A real pleasure
This podcast has just the right mix of scholarly commentary and primary source material. Lane reads the medieval sources in large, satisfying chunks, which makes them shine in all their weird, unfamiliar glory. He then helps explain (or in some cases just explore) them, so that at the end you come away if not feeling like you "understand" them, at least feeling like you've delved more deeply into the mindsets and worldviews of the time than would otherwise be possible. The past is another country, and the medieval world has always seems a lot more foreign than other periods. This podcast, while not making it seem any less foreign, really lets one see it in a lot of detail.

I love Medieval Death Trip so much. The host is engaging, the content is well researched, the analysis is compelling without being condescending or preachy. Thanks to the format and delivery of the information, it's fun and easy to listen along and form my own analysis and it offers a great starting point for personal research that I haven't had the chance to enjoy since graduating. I recommend MDT to everyone I know, from lit majors to artists. I think it has something for everyone and enough groundwork is laid each episode for anyone to glean something positive and educational out of listening.
