David Copperfield by Charles Dickens

21

Charles Dickens is one of the most appreciated Victorian writers, his novels gaining worldwide recognition by both critics and readers. First published in 1850, David Copperfield begins with avid the tragedy of David's brother dying when David is just a boy. After this episode he is sent by his step-father to work in London for a wine merchant. When conditions worsen he decides to run away and embarks on a journey by foot from London to Dover. On his arrival he finds his eccentric aunt, Betsey Trotwood who becomes his new guardian. Being witness to the formation of David's character is quite fascinating. David begins as a strong child whose only aspiration is a better life. On the way to his adulthood, David sees how people enter and leave his life. Romanticism takes its place in David’s life as he gets married to Dora Spenlow who is not long for this world. Will David ever find stability and happyness? And what of his wife? Dickens proves to be a master in creating an autobiographical work that is a captivating page-turner.

    Captivating story and storyteller
Narration brings the nuances, charm and humor of each character to life. The story is a wonderful balance of hardship and happiness, with plenty of movement and endearing moments shaping David’s life to hold my interest throughout. Charles Dickens deserves his place among the greatest authors and the narrator is a master storyteller.

    Must Listen!
An oratory gem, a truly brilliant performance by Tadhg Hynes. Lovingly and genuinely rendered, never over-dramatized. Dickens could only be proud that his masterpiece has been so masterfully read to a new generation of readers/listeners. Thank you!

    Narrated to perfection
The reader captures the optimism, the humor, and the heart of the main character so wonderfully that I suspect I wouldn’t have liked the book nearly as much if it weren’t for this narration.

    A rainbow for the ears
Tige Hines (?), the reader, does such a wonderful job of changing voices to match each changing character that he adds to Dickens' story. Give your eyes a rest and your mind a tour of early 19th English life. What were you going to do anyway? Listen to talk radio?!! It's a long drive home, relax with Charles Dickens.

    Great Audiobook
Great reading of David Copperfield - good pacing and inflection, and pleasant voice. This and Oliver Twist (read by the same person) are the best free audiobooks I've found on the podcast app.
