The History of England

History #81

This my retelling of the story of England, which is a regular, chronological podcast, starting from the end of Roman Britain. There are as many of the great events I can squeeze in, of course, but I also try to keep an eye on how people lived, their language, what was important to them, the forces that shaped their lives and destinies, that sort of thing. To support the podcast, access a library of 100 hours of shedcasts of me warbling on, and get new shedcasts every month, why not become a member at https://thehistoryofengland.co.uk/become-a-member ? The History of England
I love love love this podcast. The history of England has always been vague and confusing but David explains almost year by year what happened and how it fit together …or not. It sounds dry but it’s fascinating and entertaining the way he creates stories out of what historians know and don’t know. He often has me laughing out loud. I appreciate his explanations of sources, interpretations over the centuries by historians, oral descriptions of geography, life in the Middle Ages, what the rest of Europe was doing, and summaries. His website is packed full of maps, books, time lines, etc. i also like the birds chirping in the background. I listen to it everyday during my commute. I’m now at 1217 after a wonderful clarification of the Magna Carta. Thanks, David.

I’m still on the Anglo Saxons and catching up but I love the scholarship and witty delivery.

    Great History Podcast
This is a go to for me. It is entertaining and educational and the more I listen, the more I get into it. The companion website has tons of resources and is a great addition to help out Americans like me who don’t know where anything is in England. LOL.

Ten out of 5 if it could be given
Thank you for the podcast to which I always return. The acting out of scenes, the dramatics, the witty bits, the characterizations, the recreation of each period in the history of England … it’s just the most engaging “history of England” chat that exists.

    Excellent
Can’t believe I’ve never reviewed the show before. I’m a professional historian and David Crowther is an excellent host. Very knowledgeable (where does he keep that information? How does he keep track of all of it? What is his brain like? Truly amazing.). He has a great voice I am quite jealous of and has a fabulous sense of humor. I can’t wait for the episodes on Megan and Harry. Any day now I am sure…

    Great podcast
Love this podcast. He presents facts, but does not make it boring. I love the Tudor period, currently listening to season 5 eps 5- 30, 225 over all. One correction I believe Charles V was Katherine of Aragon’s nephew not uncle.

The Detectorist reference made my day!
Already my absolute favorite history podcast, but the shoutout to Mackenzie Crook, Toby Jones, and The Detectorist cemented David on my favorite people list FOREVER! Long live the DMDC!

Excellent historical details with plenty of wit & charm!
I love this podcast! It presents English history in a way that’s both packed with facts and easy & fun to listen too. Figures from the past are brought to life with elements of motivation and personality coming thru. If you’re a history buff or just like a compelling story I’d def recommend this podcast!!

    Lovely, worth your time
What an excellent podcast. The narrator is funny without overtaking the content of the episode and has wonderful pacing and clarity. He does a lot to keep the sometimes less exciting parts peppered with wit and humor. If you like Mike Duncan or want something more in depth than the funny Rex Factor like pods out there give this one a go. I’ve been a fan for years and still greatly enjoying it.

    Listen Again and Again
This is my third time listening to the History of England podcast. David’s incredible narration and wonderful scripts are informative and entertaining, interesting and hilarious. I love the way he discusses the historiography, uncertainty and bias of sources, but also gives you what his best guess is when the history is unclear. Add in tons of Monty python references and excerpts from the ladybird book and you have a fully rounded podcast experience. Highly recommended.

Just subscribed and I'm blow away!
Update It’s 2023 and I’m using it and it’s a huge hit. ********I am preparing to teach a medieval history class in Fall 2017 and was looking for resources for for my students. I like to mix up text, podcasts, videos, etc. The History of England and its supporting website have turned out to be one of my favorite finds ever. I cannot recommend them strongly enough. Fun and vastly informative with some really cool cameos to boot! My specialty is the early modern Spanish Empire so this podcast has already helped me to learn a great deal that I did not know about England. If you have any interest at all in history (or just a great story or 70) give it a listen. I had consciously avoided English history for a long while because it's been done to death but in this podcast you will find a funny and knowledgeable guide! ps Working on stuff with David Crowther in the background really helps on all ways. Episode 1.7 is particularly cute and very approachable.

    Engaging and informative!
I have been listening to this history of England podcast for a year now, and am almost caught up to the current episode. I LOVE this podcast and recognize the incredible amount of energy and time that has gone into it for about 15 YEARS!! I thank David for his work and hope that anyone who loves British history will take the opportunity to learn at the feet of a humorous and engaging presenter. The website is also a great resource and brings a lot of extra material to this podcast. Thank you for your hard work and passion!!!

    Kudos from the 13th Century…
Having stumbled upon this podcast, I’ve found it quite a joy. Though I am only on Episode 74, I see recent updates, so I’ll presume it’s still going on and look forward to (hopefully) catching up to the future. Kudos on a entertaining and informative effort. 😊

    The History of England
This is the greatest description of the history of England! I am constantly amazing (or boring) my family with historical information that I didn’t learn (or don’t remember) from school. My wife thinks I should invite David and Roifield for dinner. I’m also a devotee of the things that made England…Top educational entertainment!!

    Delightful
I listen to a variety of history podcasts, but this is my favorite. David has a drolly entertaining way to make complex subjects understandable and engaging. I’m all set for the start of the English Civil War of Three Kingdoms. But David made sure we all understood the complexities of how people had multiple considerations on which side to support and how Scotland, England, and Ireland scared each other into this situation. I love the nuanced approach to the lead up. It’s always more complex than one thinks! Thanks, David!

    More than wit
A hot mug of tea, a port in a storm, a chair by the hearth. But more than a hearty and droll wit, the host is, I think, a scholar delving deeply, while presenting simply. The English Revolution series has been a tour de force. A companionable voice over the years, thank you sir. And yes, worth a subscription.

    Always a pleasure
This is deeply researched podcast that is also very versatile in terms of the topics it addresses: a mixture political, social, literary, cultural history. The host presents information in a clear, straightforward way and often invites other excellent up-and-coming podcasters to guest host an episode. You can always count on your time being well spent when listening to this one.

Love the show and approve of At a Gallop!
This podcast is every bit as good as the history of Rome podcast which I love dearly.

Delightfully detailed, just a touch whimsical
The History of England is one of my three favourite podcasts, along with the Age of Napoleon and the History of Byzantium. David may self-deprecatingly refer to himself as “a bloke in a shed”, but he takes the original source material seriously indeed, and finds a way to bring it to life with an amazing balance of character studies, action, and his own brand of humour and whimsy. I found the podcast sometime around episode 340 (during the reign of Charles I) and after following along into the 370s I’ve now started listening from the beginning in Anglo-Saxon times on episode 1. I just finished Episode 159, and while I’m sad to see the sun set on the era of the longbow trouncing the Frogs, I’m excited for the epic saga of strife that is the War of the Roses.

    Very well written and spoken.
Good way to spend time learning about England, the monarchy, people, government and religions. How they all impacted each other and the ramifications. Bits of humor thru out makes you stay on your toes. Good job.

Excellent Podcast - At A Gallop is a winner!
I've listened to the podcast since the beginning. "At A Gallop" overview is a superb addition to the core podcasts. David, sometimes you drop your voice at the end of sentences (yes, for your fabulous British understatement -- wouldn't want the punchline to stand out, don't you know), but the effect is lost if we can't hear or understand the punch line.

    Amazing
This fellow makes my American descended from Scottish Graham and English Cheek pod cast listener so happy. He is informed educated and has an amazing disposition. It makes me feel like I am closer to my grandmother who use to tell me stories with her wonderful accent. Thank you sir. Thank you

Informative abd entertaining, this podcast is a joy! There is so much wit and enthusiasm that enliven the interesting tales that it makes the podcast a perfect companion.

    Great Storyteller
David’s development as a storyteller and podcaster over the course of this series has been such a joyful adventure. He excels at bringing historical figures to life and demonstrating the interconnectedness of the course history. But in addition, as a listener, you get to hear someone with a natural talent and, a commitment to doing the work, putting in their 10,000 hours of podcasting/storytelling and becoming an expert in it.

    Can’t stop listening!
I love everything about this podcast. The host makes history fun and brings the people and events from England’s past to life with his wit and humor. Best. Podcast. Ever.

    What a gem
I love this podcast. David is smart, hilarious, quirky, and has a wonderful way of bringing history to life. Also both of my children are being raised on this podcast, as they hear it on the commute to and from daycare daily. Thanks for creating such a rich and compelling podcast!

    Made me smart.
I didn’t know much of anything for most of my life, with the possibly sad exception of Art History. Now, thanks to “The History of England” I am very smart. I use my new found brilliance to annoy my wife and distress our children. My quality of life and general happiness have been immeasurably enhanced. Thanks Dave!

    Thanks for episode 364
My husband and I have been listening for years and being from New Mexico and part Native I was pleased with your study and details of Native Americans.. People will learn more in this episode then we did in American history in school, Howard Zinn’s The People’s History which I highly recommend and the Smithsonian articles are in-depth, You kicked booty! So thank you!

Come for the lardy cakes, stay for the blood bathes an burnings...
Great host. Quite funny at times, but I miss the scripted re-enactments with the kids... Those were the best. Too funny. There is an ocean of content, but seem to have spent a significant layover in the Tudor time period. The cast starts with the Romans, the barbarian invasions and Anglosaxon kingdoms, moves on to Billy the Conq. then to a bunch of french kings. War of the Roses then on to these Tudors... I am eagerly awaiting learning about the Civil War, but no sign of it yet. What‘s the difference between conquest and colonization? Great Content!

One of the best history podcasts I’ve heard
This has been my go to podcast for almost two years now. David’s voice is warm and comforting and no matter the day I’ve had I always feel calmer listening to him tell me about British history. Even when the subject matter gets a bit dry, David brings it to life and keeps me interested. I cannot recommend this podcast enough.
  • Brown Seed
    My favorite hIstory podcast
Both extremely informative and very funny, this is certainly among the best history podcasts available. Combining in depth political narrative with social history, David gives a fantastic overview of English history through the ages while providing frequent views of daily life and society at large, and along with it some top tier dad humor. Filled with running gags and funny idioms that I’m never sure whether they are common English sayings or Crowther originals, every episode is entertaining and engaging. If you want to be able to amaze your loved ones with random bits of English history trivia, or annoy them with strange references to the Earl of Warwick’s horse, this is the podcast for you. And the best part is that if over 300 episodes isn’t enough for you, the Shedcast episodes are well worth becoming a member for even more great content (particularly the William Marshall biography, which might be the best series in my opinion).
  • Nonpartisan Pedicab
    Excellent and detailed history.
Excellent podcast. At this point, I’m on episode 139. Great show. But it would be even better if the podcaster could redo every episode entirely in his Winston Churchill imitation. Riding my bike through Central America and Mexico at the moment, so I get an opportunity to listen to several episodes per day.

    Well told
David is a master of self deprecating humour. My favourites are the steak pie walking into the pub, and his expected last words about the kitchen light in the context of Charles I’s defence of the Elizabethan settlement. I do miss the old references to chocolate tea pots. The history is quite good too. The pure love he has for his subject shines through. Boom, and if you will, tish.

Better than the Best Part of a Pineapple
David presents history in an entertaining way with a clarity that makes it accessible to listeners with little knowledge of history and veteran “fans of history” alike. His humor is delightful and his humility in presenting contradicting opinions, ideas and theories is a rare gem. And his member-only content is, pound for pound, the best you will find for your money. Cannot recommend enough…better than the best parts of a pineapple!

    A history hoolie!
Alright. American me had to learn what exactly is a hoolie, giving my Irish ancestors yet another reason for disdain. No spoilers, though. David has obvious love and passion for the history, and brings to life the people, places and situations thoughtfully and wryly. Think: your favorite uncle, John Cleese and a Cambridge history professor walk into a pub. No bars here, thank you very much, a proper pub. No dull recitation of “here’s what happened” from our lad David. No, indeed. Hear the reasons, motivations, fears, and exultations of both the famous and ordinary. Princes and pirates, knights and maidens, popes and prelates, longbows and seaxes, kings and commoners. Wait, from whence cometh “commoner”? How were carts used to punish adulterers? What did Henry V truly say to his “band of brothers ” that morning on a sodden French field? Was there really an Uhtred of Bebbanburg? Tales of a true free-lancer. But wait, there’s more! Binge or savor slowly. It’s all waiting for you. Enjoy!

    Thanks from California!
Before discovering this podcast, my knowledge of medieval British history was sketchy. But with his careful preparation, serious scholarship and witty delivery, David Crowther makes the long story of the British Isles come alive. I particularly love his voice — so soothing. All history courses should be like this.
