The Curious History of Your Home

Join domestic historian Ruth Goodman as she guides you through the surprising, often epic, stories behind everyday objects in your home. Double-glazed windows? We owe those to a French king’s odd fascination with oranges. The minty fresh toothpaste by your sink? Well, if you lived in Ancient Greece, you’d be washing your teeth with ground-up bones and oyster shells. And wallpaper? It seems innocent enough, but in the Victorian era it was downright deadly.Discover the extraordinary history of the ordinary items all around you, every Tuesday, wherever you get your podcasts. For ad-free listening, exclusive content and early access to new episodes, join Noiser+. Wholesome History
Simultaneously one of the coziest and most fascinating history podcasts I’ve ever listed to. Such a brain cleanse even when the history being discussed is complex or sad.

    Ruth Goodman is AMAZING!
I have watched, read, and listened to everything that Ruth Goodman has produced that I have been able to get my hands on. I’m so upset that I missed this podcast until today, but I’m quickly working on listening to it all! She is brilliant, witty, and just plain comforting to listen to. My new favorite podcast!

I’m surprised by how Ms. Goodman makes ordinary household things so fascinating. As a lover of history this podcast is a great look addition to my library of historical topics. Plus I could listen to her talk for hours.

I listen to a ton of podcasts and I have many I adore, but none that I love as much as this one! Excellent production quality, research, and content. I learn so much every time I listen. Truly can’t recommend it enough!

This is why I listen to podcasts
I can’t wait for Monday night every week, when the new episode of Curious History Of Your Home drops. It’s so interesting, well put together, & excellently narrated that I am disappointed when the episode ends.

    Domestic history bliss
I would happily listen to Ruth Goodman narrate ANYTHING. This is so interesting, so well done, and so bloody fun!
  • somebody 1314
    Interesting !
A little bit dramatic at times, especially with the host’s thick British accent, but it is so fun to learn about where coffee came from - who would know that sheep first discovered it! lol 😂

    Enjoyable
I like Ruth Goodman’s books and the “Farm” TV series so I enjoy this but not quite as much as either of those. I just listened to an episode (Forks) in which she says the American Revolution started in 1773 🤔. I wonder if this is as well researched as her other work?

    Great show! Love the history!
I cannot get enough of all things history through the great story teller style of Ruth Goodman! I’ve watched all the “Farm” series and was thrilled to find this podcast! Yay, Ruth! Well done! Signed, loving US fan!
  • Nellygoat
    Interesting content. Annoying delivery.
Not sure why the host has to whisper pant her way through each episode. Also, the music is almost the exact same as in Real Survival Stories. I’m guessing Noiser only has one composer.

    Season 2??
Love this podcast. Hoping for more seasons!

    Speak normally
Love Ruth and all of her work— but please use your regular speaking voice! I find the ASMR-style whispering unpleasant, esp when the research is so fascinating.

    Fascinating podcast
I really enjoy this podcast, great learning about overlooked topics in history and the narrator is great as well!

    Hard pass
Over dramatic not to mention the race card thrown in there periodically. The current media can’t help itself 🙄
  • Bugsy and Maxx
    Excellent!

    Very nice
A great well done show Love them look forward to hearing each new episode
  • Duffyj83
Very interesting but the narration is a bit much for me.
Respectfully, I like the content but the narrator is overly dramatic to the point that it’s a little distracting for me.
  • samsam7717
    Calmly entertaining
Topics are well researched and strong storytelling like I never expected.

    Great narrator
I just love Ruth Goodman. She brings history to life and I got hooked on her from war time farms. Thanks Ruth you’re amazing

    Ruth Goodman is my hero!

  • Zim10202
    Interesting
I enjoy hearing these stories but somehow she finds a way to make every one of these things feel like they belong to England.

    !
So good can’t wait for more

    Fantastic for curious minds
I love this podcast so much that I’m personally offended by the rubbish negative reviews. I find it to be the right way to teach history: with a narrative and inflection that implies that even the little things do matter. We aren’t single beings living isolated lives, but in fact everything we do and use throughout our modern day is connected through history. The host is fun and has an engaging tone that makes me feel like I’m sat home watching a cozy documentary on my couch.

    This is great!
I love Ruth Goodman. I appreciate the storytelling style used to tell the history. It’s nice to have a narrative along with the history.

    Love it.
Fascinating and I love her voice.

    It’s Ruth
So happy to find this Ruth Goodman podcast.
  • Puppy Booties
Interesting — but terribly disappointing …
Her voice is too high, overly dramatic and just plain hard to listen to. And the scripts seem overwritten — but that could be influenced from her falsetto enthusiasm. You see, I’m interested in architecture and history from all ages, as well as purposeful home design, so I had much higher hopes for this podcast. Huge disappointment.
  • tincopper
    ruth is awesome
I watched ruth on absolute history many times. This podcast is informative and her voice is easy to listen to. A new favorite from noiser.
  • Oldbutspecial
    Subject interesting reading too dramatic
Subject is interesting but the reading is so dramatic Ihat I couldn’t Finish listening to the podcast. Another reader would get a better rating.

    A new favorite
I love Ruth Goodman! She’s a real expert and a great narrator here. She knows her subject, and her enthusiasm for domestic history really shines through - it’s contagious. The show itself is a great mix of dramatic narrative and clear, informative, discussions. This is another fantastic podcast from Noiser, and I can’t wait to see what topics are covered next!
  • Marjorie Sneed
So happy I found this one!
I love this kind of history and Ruth Goodman is a gem! I’m so excited to listen to more episodes. Ruth brings a joy and excitement with her when she speaks about each topic and I so enjoy learning from someone who is so clearly happy to be teaching their subject.
  • Drumheyoka
Great to hear a woman on Noiser
It’s still new, but I’m really enjoying the history of everyday objects! Keep it coming
