True Crime #132

    No intro, no context frustrating
I’ve listened to several episodes now and in the ones I’ve listened to, there was no intro, no context, the interviewer didn’t introduce themselves…it’s just podcast basics to set the listener up to understand who and what they’re to about to hear. Content is good but the show suffers as a result of those missing elements.

I used to enjoy this show
With this particular season, I unfortunately lost interest. As someone who has experienced cancer, the loss of a child and endured a 30 year marriage to a husband with severe substance abuse disorder, I know what it’s like to suffer, heal and move forward. I am an average person who enjoys hearing the stories of other average survivors. That’s not what we’re getting this season. The speakers are all authors, actresses, semi celebrities. Not everyone who recovers writes a book, starts a podcast nor goes on the speaking circuit. That doesn’t mean, however, that we aren’t as courageous, brave and resilient.

    Getting bored
This show used to be alright. Now it’s boring with all the “professionals” coming on to talk about different topics. It was much better when it was a follow-up story from SWW. The just interrupts entirely too much with nothing to offer. Just wants to hear her voice.

    So Good & Different
Love this show. Each guest is so powerful and their experiences are so unique, yet still relatable. I also love how each episode takes me through so much of each victim’s journey from start to finish. It’s impossible to cover it all, but they do a great job. I think Hearing all angles of their experiences really makes me feel less alone, and shows us the impact of true crime genre. Thank you to all the guests

    Plugging a book mid interview
When someone is telling a story and plugs their book on Amazon, mid story- it kind of makes me question the intentions of the interview.

    Compelling and diverse stories
There’s no denying the help these stories being shared will give to others. That’s why I continue to listen. I first listened to SWW so this is where I can’t give 5 stars because they talk about their stories the whole time with just 2 questions at the end. So it’s not different from SWW at all except she keeps the stories to 1-2 posts not a whole season per story. She reads so slow and broken up that I have to skip the intro every time cuz it’s painful to listen to. It just doesn’t it that title of what came next well unless she goes further into that or strictly talks about the aftermath of all the SWW stories.

    Love!!
I love this podcast!! I hate all of the hurt these people went through ❤️‍🩹 it’s crazy how relatable some of these stories are

    uggh.
i had to unfollow. the constant anti-trump dialogue is so overused. im not even a big fan but so tired of hearing all the hate. geezzzzz. it is possible to leave your personal & political opinions out of other people’s stories & experiences.

    She keeps interrupting the guests
It's so irritating to hear the host constantly interrupt the guests. She doesn't offer anything substantive with her annoying interruptions. She tries to sound like a fake psychologist or therapist. Tiffany would rarely interrupt get guests and when she did, she offered substantive statements / thoughts.

    Amazing podcast
So many great stories and moments of healing told on this show.

    Great Show
I've been a longtime listener of SWW and this pod. If you haven't listened to SWW of course you wouldn't know what is going on. To ask these ladies for a synopsis is lazy. They literally say what episode they're updating on. Go find it! Overall, I love the show but feel like the episodes are being cut down to create more content. Ik it's difficult to interview, record and edit new stories weekly. So I won't complain! Love yall O2

    Incredible Podcast!!!
I started listening to What Came Next when it was first released just a year or two ago (I heard about it through the SWW podcast). Not only has this podcast given me so much insight & perspective, but I now have an incredible amount of respect and appreciation for these victims & survivors who are brave enough to share their stories in an effort to help others, educate the public, lift each other up, and band together to make this world a better place. I grew up in a pretty traditional Christian, conservative household with right wing republican views and opinions. However, now that I’m in my mid-late 30’s with a life & family of my own I’ve made an intentional effort to expand my horizons, listen & learn about opinions & experiences very different from my own. Through this process I’ve come to realize that life is not as black and white as I thought, and many of the social & political issues we face are not simple & straight forward. The What Came Next & SWW podcasts have played a big role in this shift in my perspective and I’m no longer quick to make assumptions or judgements based on very little information. True crime has been a big interest of mine for the past few years & I'm so glad I stumbled across these podcasts when I first started exploring all of my true crime podcast options!! Amy you are incredible and you’ve made a difference in the lives of so many people, not to mention being vulnerable in sharing your own story. Thank you for giving survivors a platform to share their stories and what came next for them, what you’ve created is a remarkable community of people and the impact is worldwide. Keep up the amazing work!!!!

    Powerful
Love the perspective shared on this podcast, power to the people, the victims and their voice.

    Don’t assume
Responding to the whinny whiners review/comment. Personally I am an extremely conservative (fiscally and politically), independent, educated Southern woman that loves this podcast as well as “Something Was Wrong”. Any space that serves to inform, and hopefully prevent, someone being victimized is great.
  • Connieco
    Whiny Whiners giving reviews
Regarding the negative reviews and claims of being "woke": Perhaps you cannot stand the truth that your cult leader is a misogynistic, bullying rapist. I'll bet you REALLY DONT LIKE this show, do you??!? This is where people like Trump get called out for their horrible, inhumane treatment of others. Of course you don't want to listen! Ever notice that people who are giving bad reviews on here are professional WHINERS? They whine and complain about the show being "woke." In their self-absorbed world, being a decent, fair and honest human is being "woke!"
  • mollykate2388
    Seattle PD
It’s wild to me to hear all of the complaints about Seattle PD (regarding season 14 of SWW) when Tiffany makes it quite clear what her political stance is. Your political party is the one defunding those needed resources. Hellur?
  • RobbingHoodCrooks
    Doesn’t offer anything new
Show started out okay when it was a follow-up on survivors who had their stories covered (unethically) by media (docuseries, podcasts, etc) but has continued to fall off as it becomes a platform exclusively for those hoping to finesse their traumatic experiences into fame or financial gain (literally every guest is on here to either promote a book, their TikTok, or their own podcast. Literally every. single. one!) Also somehow manages to include too much detail while also none at all, with usually the back half of each episode being 15 minutes of filler platitudes: “Everybody heals different.” “Sharing is healing.” “Be kind to yourself.” I’ll give points for trying to be an “ethical’ true crime pod but overall is just directionless and boring
  • caitsweds
Jesus just get to the point
This pod is the worst. They give no context and just preach at you about obvious tropes for 30-60 min. Don’t waste your time. I’m a survivor of these crimes and there are a plethora of other pods that are more beneficial than this one. It’s honestly insulting to victims imo… can you be more vanilla and annoying. You might as well just post a bunch of stereotypical quotes each week about abuse in leu of an episode and it would be the same.

    Cyberstalking Awareness is Critical!
Especially after listening to this, what came next story about the death threats, etc. in addition, at least two major stories in Something Was Wrong podcast the villains did cyber stocking in addition to the mental and emotional abuse they did in person. The one that comes to the mind the most is the story of Artie or Arnie, whatever that evil guys name is. Seems like he was able to send emails and fake police reports and I would consider that partially cyber stocking as well because it’s all crimes committed via Internet and the whole cell phone thing about tracking cell phones all these apps that can track people and you don’t know that your phone is being tracked by the person that you’re with or someone you don’t know very scary. We all need to learn about this. And police departments should have a cyber unit dedicated to these issues and or type of police reports. And police report should be made if you have a lot of documentation, as was in the story. Love this podcast!

You have to be kidding, right?
Having actual trauma survivors’ interviews, alongside a woman with recovered memories of being abused and trafficked by Freemasons? Really? Does she have any proof of this satanic-panic story?
  • FrequentPlayer17
    An Incredibly Necessary Podcast
Amy does such an amazing job with this podcast. There are so many podcasts about the crimes, but very few about the survivors and their lives after the fact. These women are so brave and so strong. This is the type of podcast that can inspire hope and help for those who are being abused. I’ve fallen off of “Something Was Wrong” lately, as the host’s season was a ton of rambling, but this one is structured so beautifully and the stories are told with such meaning and compassion. So well done!
  • nthomp
    Not enough context
Good idea but the fact that there is no background summary provided makes the stories confusing.

Something Was Wrong and This is Actually Happening
I literally binged both of those shows all summer while doing things like housework and working out and I am completely hooked! I am waiting for new episodes before I renew my Wondery+ subscription but I am dying for something similar! This comes close but I think I have already watched the documentaries on many of these stories! So bummed! This is worth listening to if you haven’t already watched the documentaries.

    Summary
Something Was Wrong is my all time favorite podcast - I have listened to every single episode. I love that What Came Next is continuing the stories, however, the episodes without context to the original story makes it difficult to catch on. More often than not, I have no clue what the person is referencing/what their original story is so I just move to the next podcast. It would be great to have a quick summary of the original story so I can binge this podcast like I did SWW.

A Great Companion Pod Quickly Distinguishing Itself
I am loving What Happened Next. The camaraderie, growth and strength, plus learning what happened to some of those who shared stories on Something Was Wrong!
  • Iowan727
    Good podcast but…
Please provide a quick summary of the person’s original story. I spend much of the beginning of each show trying to recall the tale. Would add a lot to be able to have the context of the situation. Otherwise it’s good
  • AASt.Romain
Need more background to the stories.
It’s hard to follow or get engaged into a story because there isn’t much background info for “what happened.” Why was your situation so dire? No details. I’m not asking for a play by play. But at least tell us the most basic parts of what things escalated to. The most recent episode mentions all kinds of special laws and such that came about from domestic violence cases…(she mentions one by name several times) but what does it even mean?? What does that law do? How did it come about? No details at the time of mention. There’s a blurb at the very end that finally explains it, but at that point I had already looked it up bc the episode was basically over. I feel like there should be more background info to get us bought in to the story.
  • msmiklos
    Good idea, Room for improvement
I’ve listened to most of SWW, over the span of years, making me presumably the target audience for this show. I’d love to hear the epilogues to these stories! However, the narratives and individuals involved have at times blurred and I’m not interested in relistening to entire series; with that in mind, some context and reorientation to the people involved would be a huge help to finding this show entertaining and enjoyable. It also doesn’t totally make sense to me to jump from one feed to another to continue an ongoing story; if I was listening for the first time, I’d like for the “what came next” to be a bonus ep in the SWW feed.

    PROVIDE SYNOPSIS!
Come on!!!! You’re giving updates of stories that have been listened to sooo long ago. Updates are sooo important but it’s not even worth listening. GIVE A SYNOPSIS OF THE EPISODE YOURE COVERING!!!!!! HELLOOOO

    Report your abuse!!!
Do not let your abusers hide in plain sight. Even if they are not prosecuted immediately, let the police and an attorney or advocate record your allegations.

Any bad review is just conservative weirdos
This show and something was wrong gives people an outlet to tell their story through their words. I see nothing wrong with that. Glad this new show exists to help us understand that being a victim is a lifelong endeavor.
  • Runningmamasita
    Fantastic podcast but…
It really is a fantastic podcast and I love the SWW updates. One suggestion though - give a brief synopsis of the what the guest/survivor is giving an update on.
  • fabby20102016
Good idea but needs some tweaking
SWW is one of my favorite podcasts so I really want to like what came next. The stories are hard to follow and I find myself often confused with who is talking and what is the story. Would be helpful if a little background is given at the top of the episode. I don’t get as invested in the story because I feel lost. I really like the concept so hoping you can tweak some things and improve the story telling. Thanks for being willing to air these important stories!
  • Colorundone
Won’t someone think of the white women!?
Anything associated with Tiffany Reese needs to be reminded her irony of doxxing a moderator of a Reddit page and sending her minions to harass them. Very ironic from the face of an abusive relationship podcast.

    Great Updates!
Thank you for providing a safe place for victims to give listeners updates. I often wonder how these victims are doing after hearing their stories, and hope that they are healing. Their bravery and resilience always astounds me ❤️

    Episode 8 with Mr. Blechman
This episode was very heart felt. Through such a horrible tragedy of the Holocaust as a kid, his faith in God did not waver. I pray that he is able to have a beautiful life. You did an amazing job capturing his story! Keep up the great work!
  • grovesmm
    Love it!
I have been listening to SWW since the first season. After listening to the WCN updates episodes on SWW about Danielle on Wondery+ I knew I had to come listen. I don’t quite know how to say it, but Amy has a no nonsense attitude and I applaud her strength and resilience. Small complaint: the ads are exceptionally louder than the episode and it’s a bit off-putting. Keep up the good work!

    Amazing
Wow, this podcast is so well done! Amy does an incredibly job with each guest as they share such hard and tender things about their experiences. I also love the additional insights about workplace abuse, CPTSD, and the road to recovery added so skillfully to the episodes. So respectful, tasteful, and important! Highly recommend.
