jvk-zhouExcellent companion to Tooze’s ChartbookSeveral months ago I discovered Adam Tooze’s Chartbook on Substack and I immediately subscribed and dug in. The depth of information in it is far beyond what you can often find scanning through publications on your own, which is why I find it so valuable. So, the podcast is like dessert for me. It accompanies the Chartbook and consolidates the weekly information into what feels like a 45 minute accessible dissertation.

SmeddyMuttIn an age of self promoting charlatansAnd fake experts, Adam Tooze stands out as one of increasingly rare real experts. One of the best free programs you could listen to.

dbrowardExhilaratingThe Kant episode was a tour de force of compression & celerity, yet unfailing clarity as well. Thank you for rousing this slumbering dog, gentlemen.

elpcreek326566swdwAdam has biasesEnjoy the economic and historic topics, not much his politics. It’s so obvious that he has pet peeves. But it gets worse when his biases lead him to pick and choose which facts to present to his readers and listeners. One example is his view on Columbia student protest. In this podcast, he criticizes Columbia and police for citing safety reasons, yet omitting the major escalation where protestors entering and occupying an academic building (where he taught a class earlier that day, per his newsletter).

AwesomePossum3Great conversations, often lacking self-awarenessI am a devotee of this pod - AND. I understand and appreciate Adam’s skepticism of US global power projection, but this often drives him to unquestioningly accept revisionist counterpositions that service a worldview that he would ultimately reject. Like those of the Houthis (who have been chomping at the bit to get in on anti-Israel activities for years) and China. I often encounter this arrogance among Brits and Europeans who have a deep resentment of US power, though they are completely dependent on it. It’s an emotional, irrational position, and often pops up in this otherwise delightful podcast.

Haydon PitchfordLost Me After The Red Sea EpisodeWhile typically a very helpful and informative podcast, Adam Tooze didn’t bring his usual rigor to the recent episode on the Red Sea. Instead, he was more interested in turning the Houthis into a sympathetic character of anti imperial resistance in service of his broader point on American or western power. One can acknowledge the complicated, nuanced and often unsavory reality of US influence in the Middle East while not blindly accepting the political rhetoric of a brutal, cruel group like the Houthis. As someone that has enjoyed all of Tooze’s written work and listened to Ones and Tooze for years now, this came across as unprofessional and unfortunate.

Bespectacled ApePro TerroristCast was supposed to be about economics. Tooze should have questioned and stopped the rant against Israel.

nxavisAdam is a smart cookieProbably my favorite liberal econ or politics pod. Adam is brilliant and eloquent on a huge variety of topics, and intellectual renaissance man. Credit to FP for sponsoring such a proudly Keynesian project, though I do find the Amazon Ring ads problematic (that is a malevolent product).

We're All Just LeavesEconomic EpiphaniesYour podcasts are always enlightening, but the one on August 25, 2023 was outstanding, especially the analysis of the economic situation in Japan and Britain. You go a long ways towards making economics understandable and useful to those of us that never took an economics class. Thank you.

PageColemanMy god what a comet of a showI’ve never reviewed a podcast — except maybe one of my own ;) — but this is a comet through smog. Thanks to Adam and Cameron for this scintillation.

Mike TrobeGreat podcast!Yet another reason to look forward to Fridays as that’s when this podcast comes out. Adam is brilliant and Cameron asks all the right questions. We’ll done!!

ttt993399Great on the historical view, sometimes not as thorough on current situationRecent episode on Fed Jackson Hole meeting and teacher pay reflects the best and worst of the podcast. Wonderful explanation of how the Fed meeting at Jackson Hole originated and how it became so important. Wonderful, insightful discussion that you cannot find elsewhere. Pretty poor discussion on US teacher pay and unions as it failed to consider/discuss that pay is not based on performance just tenure and the inability to control overall costs where increases in education funding often end up increasing administrative employees rather than actual teachers. They took a very complicated situation and just took a very progressive sound bite position.

AldenPearsonMainstream leftist academia groupthinkIf you feel intellectually superior parroting this narrative, this is a podcast for you. If, however, you prefer independent thought, pass on it. Keynesian economics all the way through.

SAARKÉSHBrilliant discussions of Global Economical ImpactIncredible analysis of why & how the economical systems and behaviors have brought us to this point and where we are heading next to survive! Please keep up the great topics and coverage! For example, economically speaking, which data measured can determine that the destruction and demise of a culture and a country by force has won?

Nickname1792804Great for the ThoughtfulThere are many great things about this show, but what I enjoy the most is that it brings nuance to frequently over simplified topics. Their podcasts on sanctions have especially given me a lot of food for thought.

LEKoetAdam Tooze should rant more oftenI thoroughly enjoyed Adam’s diatribe about the incoherence of the Brexit project and the fundamental non-seriousness of those who advanced it. I first encountered him on the “Talking Politics” podcast (which is also excellent), and found him so insightful that I was delighted to hear that he had his own podcast. But I’ve never heard him sound personally offended by something before; it was very entertaining. He should do a “Adam’s Diatribe” segment once a month or similar.

TryingtothinkofmorenicknamesUtterly enjoyable and interesting! The range of topics covered, the rapport between the hosts, and Adam’s clear explanations make this podcast quite enjoyable!! It strikes a great balance between serious economics discussion and light hearted podcast discussion.

rebd8excellentwinning pair, always relevant, they break down complex contemporary issues for a wide-ranging listenership. Thank you!

Finance Kid 117ExcellentAbadi is a deft interviewer, and Tooze, as always, is superlative.

wiatrwpoluBroaden the expert pool & speak clearlyAdam as an expert on everything works only some of the time - it would make more interesting to make it twos and threes every now and then. Also, please take some voice lessons - the length of a sentence should match one’s lung capacity - otherwise the delivery weakens with the declining oxygen supply. Adam you need inflation!

helenjohnFavorite Economics PodcastOnly 4 episodes in but I am enthralled. Tooze’s depth and breadth of the subject will have you paying attention to every word. Great for people beginning to learn about Econ.
-
KalebbnSnappy and well producedNot just Adam chatting (which would be good on its own) but it’s got a fun host and nicely (though not overly) edited and produced.
-
EtatnycWould love to see an episode diving into the topic of wealth taxation.Fantastic educational podcast. I heard Adam on Ezra Klein’s podcast and this is of a similar cut of Ezra’s. Great deep dive of the US and World’s financial dynamics. It will get you real smart, real quick if you listen carefully enough IMO. Cameron is a perfect fit with Adam and introduces the topics really well. *Would love to see an episode diving into the topic of wealth taxation*

AnimaJunoAbsolutely essential podcastToose is brilliant and it’s refreshing to hear his progressive Keynesian leaning economic ideas.
-
Zazzy podcastsSuper good! It’s the truest sign of intelligence when you can explain complex concepts to anyone — and that’s what Tooze does!
-
JTown96The Best Economics PodcastAlthough there have only been two episodes so far, the topics covered have been so interesting! I loved the one about bullet trains. I’ll definitely be listening to all of the future episodes.

TuckyJG11GreatGreat podcast

Cash splatThank youAbsolutely love this show. Mr. Abadi asks the sort of questions that a curious non economist like me and Mr. Tooze answers the questions in language that’s anyone can understand. Helps assuage the fear peddling of politicians and media. Virtual hug, elbow bump, pat on the back to them both.
-
jojoru39Makes me smarter!A great new show! I’m not typically interested in economics but the catchy name caught my eye so I checked it out. Adam and Cameron do a good job of explaining complicated topics in an interesting and engaging way. Definitely subscribing!
-
Shawn62Well produced and informativeI enjoyed this first episode with the focus and discussion on the affects of COVID on the US and world economy. Would love to hear more about Keynesian vs Austrian economics and how they can address the world economy through this decade. Keep up the great work!

Mike IbexiaA pleasure to hear Adam ToozeI discovered this podcast by chance the day after the first episode was released. I was ecstatic to see a podcast with Adam Tooze as a co-host (as I’m sure many others will be). The first episode was good, though the questions put to Adam by the other co-host were asked in what seemed like an affected tone, which felt a little disingenuous and perhaps condescending to the audience. I’ve never read Foreign Policy, and I have no idea what the publication’s readership is like. This podcast has potential for a huge listenership and deserves that, but the producers of the show ought to be conscious of their aim.

tvolponUnimaginably productive, now he has a podcastMy favorite historian/contemporary intelectual now has a podcast, besides all he writes. It begs the question: does he find time to sleep?

WomencandoitOnes and ToozeI was skeptical of both my interest in this subject and my grasp of it before I listened, but was gratefully wrong on both counts! It was not only understandable but totally compelling. Cameron Abadi and Adam Tooze were in good synch with each other and explained the debt ceiling and it’s relevance, which I have never understood before. And the next segment about the effects of pandemic on workers was also amazing to hear. I hope to hear more about the implications than even just this episode. You have sparked my interest!
