explorations in the magic of music
Why do I love this podcast so much? I’m not a trumpet player, not even a jazz musician, or a music student—but this podcast is amazing. First, I do enjoy listening to jazz, so the Trumpet Summit has introduced me to a number of incredible musicians I hadn’t heard of before. The stories some of these people tell (like Eddie Henderson’s first trumpet “lesson” with Louis Armstrong, followed up by his living room performance as a teenager with Miles Davis — WOW!). One of the things I love the most about this podcast is the host—John Raymond— his preparation (he does so much background research before each interview); his questions and then his follow up questions; I think of John as a model of how to do podcast interviews in any genre, it’s that good. The depth of discussion that John gets into with each of these guests explores the absolute depths of jazz trumpet playing, and does so in a way that I see connections to so many other things—craft, artistry, career arcs, history, generational wisdom, discipline, science, art, even topics like race and gender. But maybe, above all, there just this magical thing—the music—and John and his guests have gotten this taste of transcendence, and then get to explore that magic together for an hour at a time. I love it — I hope he does a third season.

A must-listen for students, professionals, and jazz fans
Not only has John put together an all-star lineup of guest jazz trumpeters, his thoughtfulness and preparedness is without compare. These interviews cover ground that is often not discussed in other interviews. I feel inspired after each episode and can’t wait for the next one to drop!
