Movies That Made Us Gay

150

This is the podcast where we watch a movie from our past that had a lasting impression on our little gay lives.  If we had no business watching it - we stole our parents VHS copy and watched under the cover of night.  If a diva gave a rousing speech - we memorized it and lip-synced it at a talent show.  Join Scott and Pete each week for a look back at the Movies That Made Us Gay!

    Exorcist
Hey you two, love the show! I just listened to the Exorcist episode and wanted to comment. You had commented that Ingmar Bergman and Ingrid Bergman were married but this is not true; the two were never romantically linked but they were both Swedes. The other comment I wanted to make is on the exquisiteness of Exorcist 3. The beauty is in the details of the relationship that Lt Kinderman has with Father Dyer—characters in both 1 and 3–and their shared grief over Father Karras. The epic scenes with Brad Douriff’s “Gemini Killer” are so intense that it’s totally worth a watch for those alone, not to mention Jason Millers return in the truest test of his faith in his sweet bids for death. And what’s more, the nod to George Scott’s then wife Colleen Dewhurst, voicing the demon when confessing to Lt Kinderman in the church. I would encourage you both to give it another look. Pure exquisiteness!

Just found your podcast mentioned in an article in The Advocate. 1st episode I listened to was my favorite movie Auntie Mame. The episode was top drawer!

    Two Guys and a Podcast
In a world of mediocre podcasts, one man married to another man, race back in time to analyze and discuss films that for whatever reason have stuck with so many of Dorothy’s friends all these years later. Each episode is like a love letter being slid under the closet door of my childhood, acknowledging and finally talking about all the things I wish I could have discussed back then. Pete and Scott not only offer up engaging and entertaining commentary with equally hilarious guests, but also offer critical and insightful thoughts and recommendations, showcasing their genuine love and appreciation of all things film. Two French tipped thumbs way up!💅👍👍💁‍♂️

    My Fave New Find!
As co-host of Drew Barrymore-centric podcast How Do You Drew, I’m always on the lookout for other pods with Drew content. So happy I stumbled upon this gem! I’ve already burned through all their incredible Drew movie episodes and now I’m excited to jump into the rest. It’s so refreshing to listen to hosts who really know their stuff! Pop culture kings!

I was a huge fan of this podcast until…
I found this podcast about 2 years ago and was thrilled when I did. Almost immediately it became one of my favorites, and I was always so excited to see a new episode drop, not just because of the expertly curated movie choices (90% of which are usually personal favorites) but also because of the fun yet in-depth analysis and discussion of the films. I binged it quickly and was so happy to find a pod that was a genuine escape from how depressing the world was around 2021. And with one flippant comment, they ruined it all for me. The “ACAB” comment during the “Wild Things” episode was jarring, highly inappropriate, and bigoted, and something I wouldn’t expect from people who know what it’s like to have society impose stereotypes on them that couldn’t possibly be universally true. There are REAL human beings behind that statement, people who work at a ridiculously dangerous and stressful job for crap pay who have the highest rates of suicide, alcoholism, depression, and divorce, and who do it because they genuinely want to serve people. 7 of them were killed in cold blood just this past month trying to protect people. They’re not a punchline for your movie podcast. I expected more from you guys than this. At the very least, it would be nice to know that this podcast was hosted by intelligent men who understood that passing judgement on an entire population was supposed to be the antithesis of what we should be doing in this modern day world.

    Love This Podcast
It’s like being in the middle of a conversation with your gay friends talking about movies where you just take in the juicy info and perspectives. Excellent podcast!

    What a delight
I stumbled on this podcast trying to find a good breakdown of the film The Blue Lagoon and why it’s such a formative film. I mostly found podcasts that rip that movie to shreds, until I found this. Pete, Scott, and Braden didn’t absolve the movie of its ~problematic~ aspects, but they didn’t trash it either and I appreciate that. Also it was hilarious. I’ve since binged multiple episodes and love Pete and Scott’s film-savvy convos, anecdotes, and guests they have on. 10/10 would recommend.

    Charming and funny!!
This podcast is like talking about movies with your funniest, smartest and nicest friends. Scott and Pete's enthusiasm can make you want to even watch movies you would never consider otherwise.
  • Moose-alini
    Mmmhmm…
I mostly love this podcast, but one of the hosts makes banal statements and then follows it up with an arrogant “Mmmhmm” like it’s the greatest statement in the world. It almost seems like a tic at this point, but it makes my misophonia rage. And I agree with a previous statement about most of their movies being full of yt people.

    Love you guys!
Discovered your pod through Paul and Erica (That Aged Well) and am currently making my way through your backs eps. I am probably a different demographic in that I am a hetero, CIS female in my 60’s. Just listened to Polyester and it reminded me of the time in the early 80’s, living with my gay best friend. His friend called and said she was running away from home and asked if she could come to our apartment. She showed up in a Mercedes her Daddy had bought her and a full length mink coat. I could not stop laughing. Anyway thanks for all you do!
  • Cupcakeyay
    Love the pod!!
Unfortunately none of the movies made me gay, but I’m still hoping it’ll happen.

    Lots of fun
Fun analysis of movies from the 80s and 90s.

    Binge-worthy!!
I love this podcast! I discovered you boys on I Saw What You Did (shoutout to my kindred spirits Millie and Danielle!) and was so excited to dive into all your episodes. This show is like coming home to my misfit, latch key childhood of the 80s and 90s. So much fun and heart! ♥️♥️

THE BREADTH! THE DEPTH! THE CAMP!
I love this podcast. I love Pete and Scott. And I love all of these films. Take a brain vacation with these hubba-hubba movie husbands. I laugh until I pee, every episode. 5 stars.

    Halloween episode
Big fan just real quick, it is possible to be a “trump supporter” & not agree with everything he says or thinks. I mean i’m a “trump supporter” & I love you guys … I mean I love & support anyone who’s a genuine good person. Politics don’t really determine a person as a whole. Anyway keep the episodes coming y’all are amazing & I crack up almost a constantly & can’t get enough!!!

    They’ve Kept Me Gay!
Pete and Scott are so enjoyable to listen to. It feels like you’re hanging out with two gay film nerds and I love that!!! I love the catalogue of movies that they’ve covered, and they’ve had some great guest stars on their pod.
  • Lucksterama
    Great show
I love this podcast and enjoy the exchanges between the hosts and the guests as they talk about the cultural significance of movies. I was listening to back to back episodes deep into the catalog when I realized…the hosts rarely discuss movies with non-white protagonists. Of the 150+ episodes only 4 have lead characters of color, two of which are Whoopi Goldberg and one of which is Lucy Liu in an ensemble role. I in no way think the hosts should discuss movies that aren’t relevant to them. But having this disconnect hanging over every episode became a distraction to the point where it’s all I could think about while listening. Very good podcast but the “us” isn’t very inclusive. I’ve involuntarily been pulled away from the excitement I once had around it.

I've spent much of my life outrunning the past, and now it floods all over me.
Since “Showgirls” (1995), I fell in love with this podcast. Every Friday while cleaning my office, I listen to Pete’s and Scott’s anecdotes and fun trivia about the movie they cover. I find it hilarious how Scott is the one who did not grow in L.A. yet knows where every single building or street is located. Here’s a question for both of you: Who is the Gene Siskel and who is the Roger Ebert? Love you guys.

    Refreshing, Engaging, Uplifting, Enlightening
I’ve found this podcast to be a delightful alternative to many other movie podcasts. Not only does this show cover films not usually discussed but does so in both a personal and informative way. For instance, Scott, Pete, and guests relate stories of how the movie in question affected them then and now. Also, they take a critical eye at the films, making comparisons to similar movies or delving into the other works of the actors, directors, and costumers. A solid show that never disappoints.

    Late to the show…
Having only recently at 50-something accepted myself after decades of hiding and avoiding myself, your podcast has been one of the companions on my journey. I’ve only seen about half of the movies you’ve covered so far (“Mean Girls” just over the holiday weekend) but looking forward to expanding my viewing so I can get caught up!

    TGIF!
Scott & Pete make every Friday even better with a new episode of their hilarious and witty podcast. I started with episodes about movies that I loved. I then went down the path of movies I missed and I wonder how I ever skipped them. Every episode is like a party and they always have unbelievable insight into the films. I am always amazed when I learn something new about a movie I have watched dozens of times. You Can’t Stop The Movies with this five star podcast!

My 10-Year Old Self is In Joy Overload
Way back in the 80s, my uncle made me a VHS tape with The Neverending Story, Legend, and Return of The Jedi. I watched it so much I could quote entire scenes from any one of those movies. Listening to this podcast is like being 10 again and curling up on the couch with a bag of Twizzlers and my My Buddy doll for another solo watch party. Only this time it’s watching with a group of friends who also long to run off into the sunset hand in hand with Tom Cruise while Tangerine Dream plays in the background. If anyone asks, I would highly recommended they take a sip from the MTMUG (empty mug). You won’t regret it.

    GROCERY SHOPPING WITHOUT THESE GUYS
I use to HATE grocery shopping. Now every time I go I tune into an episode with Pete & Scott. There I am laughing to myself as I choose a ripe melon and feeling like I have my two buddies helping me load my cart with Topo Chico. I love the banter, facts and opinions. Thank you for inspiring me to revisit so many great movies.

    A top fav!
Love these cuties. Such an enjoyable podcast: smart, witty and funny. Also enjoy all the guests as that is a fun way to keep things fresh and spicy.

    Love the movie choices
Listening to these guys reminds me of chatting with my college friends at a diner in the middle of the night about our favorite movies. A fresh walk down memory lane!

    Got me through lockdown
I started listening to MTMUG during lockdown and was immediately drawn in. Love the movie choices. Super humorous and smart. I enjoy listening while working from home. Scott & Pete are charming (and handsome, see their Instagrams). They also introduced me to another new fave podcast, “That Aged Well.” Just listened to “Mean Girls” episode and Pete accidentally called Gretchen Wiener “Dawn Wiener” and now we must have a “welcome to the dollhouse” episode please!
  • oksureyes
    Absolutely delightful
Just listened to the Parent Trap episode. Goddamn this show is so great. Such a delicious combo of movie facts, personal stories, and genuine joy for so many movies from my childhood that I also love. Such an easy listen!

Like Hanging Out With Your Friends
These guys are so fun and comforting to listen to. It’s like they somehow got ahold of my favorite movies and decided to make a podcast out of them. One of my favorite LGBTQ themed podcasts. I wish this was around when I was growing up. Highly, highly recommended. Keep up the good work you guys.

Going through the episodes like potato chips- can’t stop!
Good movies and good vibes. I’m really in love with this podcast! They have a way with movies and movie knowledge. The podcast is spreading happiness and rainbows everywhere. Scott and Peter have excellent skills and great guests. Makes it super fun and easy to listen too. Makes me rewatch movies, listen to episodes of my favorite movies, and plan if I will rewatch the movie first then listen to the episode or vice versa.

    Totally ‘gets it’
Pete, Scott and their guests add insight, knowledge and undeniable fun to an already-interesting subject. I’ve just listened to four episodes in a row, and I’m loving the time I spend revisiting the past that’s helped shaped my present...as a gay guy who loves movies!

    MTMUG FAN
I was already a fan of Pete from the podcast Very Special Television so I was excited to listen to this new show about the films that inspired/shaped Pete and Scott (and their guests) and I was NOT disappointed. Such a funny show and so fascinating hearing about films that no one else is talking about, how they were made, and how they reflect or relate to the gay community. Give it a listen if you want to laugh and learn!
  • Cheese powder
    Yes to all of this
As a straight cha cha girl who’s always identified as a gay man, I love this podcast! I love learning interesting fun little facts about my favorite movies. The 80’s and 90’s are the glory years for the CAMPIEST, quote worthy, out of control movies and I’m here for it.
