    Thorough and worth listening to…
What makes this captivating isn’t just the story but it’s the dogged spirit, empathy and intelligence demonstrated by the two journalists. They are unafraid to ask the painful, uncomfortable questions. The results of this investigation are a testament to the power of persistence by the family, certain dedicated law enforcement personnel and the journalists. The case is fascinating and I’ve never listened to a podcast in which no stone was left unturned. As an aside, the podcast mercifully does not resonate with “real crime” podcasts that insult your intelligence and disrespect the victims and their families. This is a true, respectful investigative piece.

    Great Listen, Satisfying Conclusion
Really great investigative work that left little to wonder about after the conclusion. They weren’t afraid to ask the tough questions, and in one particularly uncomfortable episode, willing to hold law enforcement accountable directly for their failure to perform their duties effectively. Hosts’ personalities were magnetic, and I enjoyed hearing from them every episode. Highly recommend!

    Dry and boring
Seems like an interesting case but it is presented in the driest possible way by the driest sounding journalists.

    Utterly Outstanding
Brilliant work. Anyone who thinks journalism is obsolete should listen and rethink their opinions. For Chris and Peta…. I’m so sorry.

Dan and Stephen, this podcast was just incredible. What a commitment on your part, I was absolutely gripped and when those gravestones were found 🙏🏼 wow it was thrilling. What a terribly sad loss and cruel ending to two beautiful lives, so Painful to even consider. Kudos to Vince for telling his story too 🙏🏼 I trust he will find where his Mum’s body was discarded in such a brutal way. Thank you both again, I say appreciated the different approaches in your questioning, coming from Ireland I understand very much the ‘Stephen approach’😅 pulling no punches ( thinking especially of the interview where the word ‘unfortunate ‘ was used repeatedly 🙈 well done you both / bless both families in their loss, you have helped them so much to find closure / Bravo 👍🏼 thank you 🙏🏼

    Interesting but a bit disjointed
Overall an interesting podcast of a terrible crime. I enjoyed it but This podcast suffers from showing its age in a genre that’s evolving and professionalizing quickly. At times the pacing is too slow and at others very fast. It seems that this was filmed in progress so they needed some fillers and it might have benefitted from being fully scripted. The hosts seem genuinely interested and invested in the case but also clueless and hopelessly naive. They’re shocked that a public defender would try to defend her client? Have no idea what trauma responses are? (The criticisms of their badgering of witnesses who were children are valid and were very uncomfortable) They seem surprised that an FBI agent won’t verbally admit any possible errors. In many ways it seems like they’re new investors having the scales fall from their eyes about the “real world”. The sheer amount of badgering and leading witnesses undermines much of the investigation. This wasn’t biggest issue- almost everyone they talked to could have taken all their cues from them to “remember” specifics

Riveting, great investigative journalism of a real life crime, so sad but you have to listen to the end.

    Well done
Great interviewing, details, hosts, and intriguing. Only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is because it jumped around a bit for my taste but all n all very well done. Disturbing and unsettling true story.

    Incredible Story
Hosts are enjoyable to listen to and they construct a well-told story. The numerous mistakes by police investigators is unbelievable. Looks like no one will ever be held accountable for the murders or the screw-ups. Is there a movie in the works?

So very well researched, professional and incredibly credible. Well done.

    Lots of Cringe Included
I’m going to give Stephen a really useful tip - look into trauma-informed reporting. It will help you immensely when talking to survivors of horrific events. The brow-beating and belaboring of details (yes, she was nude - we understood it at first mention) was so unseemly and uncomfortable to listen to. Some parts of this podcast are interesting, but so much is also unnecessary and very cringey. I thought US journalists were sensationalist, but I guess it’s true when they say British reporters are out for blood.

Interesting story but I’m appalled by Stephen’s unethical behavior
Update: I’m quitting this podcast halfway through episode 3 because of the attitude and behavior of the host Stephen. He has no clue what he’s talking about yet acts as if he’s an authority. I also filed a complaint with BBC Sounds. Conflating your (misguided) personal views with professional reporting has real consequences for listeners. And no, Stephen isn’t the murderer. He’s one of the hosts. At the end of episode 2, I felt sick hearing him shame the man who witnessed murders as a child for not reacting in the way he imagines a “normal child” would react. Excuse me? And it wasn’t just that clip, I’ve now heard others (and I’m only on episode 3) where he seems to fancy himself a psychotherapist. It’s so hard to listen to that it makes me question the BBC’s journalistic integrity to the extent that I’m looking into submitting a complaint. Journalists have an ethical responsibility when interviewing, and this behavior is inexcusable.

    Don’t bother
Usually steer clear of BBC podcasts and this reminded me why. Egocentric journalism - extremely patronising towards interviewees, and the listener. They discuss their travel schedules as if they are the first people to ever travel for work, it’s bizarre. They describe developing nations as if it’s the ‘50s, constant quips about infrastructure etc. Steve is unbearable and outright inappropriate as an interviewer. Painful. Don’t insert your personality into your work if your personality is trash. I feel angry i listened to 7 episodes haha.

    It’s a looooong walk
That’s not worth taking. If you like 10 hours of red herrings and manufactured drama you’ll love it.

    Not perfect, but very good
This very old true crime case podcast isa little rushed in places and disorganized in others but overall a very well researched and produced show. I hope for more updates as I’m on the very last episode now. It’s a good binge of international sea murder, great mix of Maritime adventure and international mystery. lots of surprises!

    Glad I listened!
These people saying “victim blaming”... it’s absurd. No one is blaming anyone. Hard questions are asked, for sure. I think they were asking for human interest. To understand what they felt, and why they might have felt that way, and reacted the way they did. Not to blame them. Just to answer questions that many people would have. It’s well done, I’m glad I listened, and I’d recommend the podcast to anyone who enjoys true crime podcasts!

You guys hit the nail right on the head.
I was kind of bored listening to your podcast during the beginning episodes but the ending episodes were really amazing especially when you guys pointed out the failures of law enforcement in general and how they impact many lives alive and dead all across the world.

    Shaming the Children
1st episode was good. But gradually grew really really distasteful as Steve one of the producers questions the now grown son of the murderer with a tone implying as an 11 year old he could/should have acted differently. Steve pokes and prods this man with little sympathy let alone understanding for the horror inflicted on the child. Honestly it’s so disturbing to listen to. What should an 11 year old do exactly? Stand up to his murderous father? The kids were obviously terrified as well as isolated from any normal adults.

Awesome podcast! How does this not have more reviews?
Been obsessed with true crime since covid, especially long form. This is one of the craziest , beautiful, terrible stories I’ve ever heard. Dismiss the small number of ratings. Listen now!! On second thought, clear your schedule first...you won’t be able to stop listening.

    Binge-worthy!
Wonderfully researched and written. Uncovering the truth and injustices is hard work and the host obviously cares very deeply for the victim’s family. Vince, i hope you are okay. Keep on reporting. Lana.

Unusually well researched podcast, and a tragedy told with humor and meticulously researched. Highly recommend.

    Really enjoyed it
Up until victim blaming a man for a traumatic situation he was in when he was a CHILD. I urge you to do your research on what happens to someone during a trauma especially to this degree because his response was more than normal and just because his response doesn’t fit your expectations of how a “normal child” should have responded does not mean you are qualified to make any kind judgement about his experience. Go read The Body Keeps the Score or anything by Bessel Van Der Kolk and Peter Levine. They are both published authors with mountains of EVIDENCE based research only a mouse click away. Ps...I believe you Vince and I cannot imagine what that must have been like for you. ❤️

    “Normal” reaction to trauma
Overall a very enjoyable listen. One concern- this is coming very late, but I am troubled by the pieces where the boys’ accounts of their reaction to witnessing the murders are then used as evidence that their story is false or made up. They each describe freezing and becoming speechless or unable to act as they witness the murders. The hosts state multiple times that a “normal” child would have screamed or tried to act, and if the boys did not do so, this is evidence of falsehood. In fact, when children find themselves experiencing a traumatic situation where they cannot escape, they frequently freeze. This is 100% a “normal” reaction under the circumstances. I wish that the hosts would have done a bit of research on this piece, as they brought it up more than once when casting doubt on the stories.

    Great and worth a listen
Very thorough and interesting investigation. Lots of details and a heartbreaking story. Everyone involved is great to hear, except for the second presenter. He comes off a little bombastic, but fortunately the main presenter is highly endearing and takes up the vast majority of the reporting.

    Where is this going?
This podcast goes on and on with possible alternatives and misdirections. It was like a defense of a criminal that was 99.5% guilty. Doesn’t a good story have to have conflict and questions to be answered? Listen to this then and compare to something like S-Town. That’s 5 stars. This is 2 and that’s online giving point for effort.
  • Lovelypolly
    Wow!
Well researched, fascinating, great narrative, no adverts. It’s sad that this horrific crime has in some ways become entertainment but hopefully this podcast will be a warning to any young people traveling the world to be as street smart as possible. It resonated with me as I have backpacked through these areas and I also probably would have trusted an American guy with a sailboat and two kids. The whole thing is shocking on many different levels. Definitely deserves 5 stars!

I listen to A LOT of podcasts and I think this is the first time I’ve had full body chills at the end. Such a poignant ending. So many people failed Chris and Peta but this podcast beautifully memorialized them. Thank you for telling their story. God bless Vince for continuing to try to do the right thing over and over. Such a hard life but kept his moral compass. ❤️
