The Pestle: In-depth Movie Talk, No Fluff | Film Review | Spoilers

27

Cinema lovers unite! Two actors and filmmakers decided to cut through all the fluff and start a movie podcast where they actually discuss the film and not a million other things you don’t care about. Covering the obvious (did you like the movie?) while diving a little deeper (what is Interstellar really about? is there a bootstrap paradox?) we are having an in-depth conversation about movies and see if they hold up to scrutiny, and maybe even inform us about life or moviemaking itself. Because a good movie is often about more than what it’s about. So, let’s see if these Hollywood directors & writers are up to snuff as we cover blockbusters, independent films, direct to Netflix movies, and everything else; maybe your next favorite film is an indie you haven’t even heard of, let us introduce you to another way of watching movies.

    Secret of Kells
Greetings Gents! Found your podcast because of your review of Annihilation. I found many of my own ideas being echoed in your review. Helpful to know I’m not crazy, or at least not crazy alone! I would like to ask you to review an animated film, “The Secret of Kells.” Your review of the Book of Eli gave me hope that you would deal with Kells properly. Thank you for your work, and I look forward to hearing you discuss the Secret of Kells! EDIT: thank you for reviewing the secret of Kells. Your in depth look at the charachters as well as the artistic form, including the music was really nice to listen too. However! I had really hoped you would touch more on the themes of faith and the various tensions that were so expertly portrayed on this film. I wish I could sit down and go over your interpretation of these themes since, again, you dealt with the book of Eli so masterfully! Maybe a second review? Kells deserves it! :)

A deep and different approach… really smart duo.
Big fan of this podcast Wes is a really smart guy and brings a bevy of knowledge on a lot of topics (even beyond cinema) that makes this movie show a bit deeper than most of the others I listen to. Todd brings a nice counterpoint and soul to each show. I also like that both of these guys seem to enjoy the same movies as I do, which is an added bonus. Keep it up fellas!

Film Talk for Fans and Nerds
Really loving the show and fresh perspectives. Most shows regurgitate the same talking points and observations, if they stay on topic at all, but they spend almost the entire show discussing the movie in detail and with a passion for film and storytelling. Keep it up fellas!

    My Forever Film Podcast
Have been listening to the Pestle for awhile now, but haven’t quite been able to put into words how much I love this pod. I’ve always been into film, but it wasn’t until the pandemic that my interest developed into a passion - and being able to share the magic of film with Todd and Wes has been awesome. Listening is like being in a room with two (really knowledgeable, fun) best friends. As filmmakers themselves, they always teach me something new, from cinematography choices and composition to acting and film meaning. Just all around stellar film analysis. And their passion for film really comes through - they get so excited about every film they discuss, it makes you want to just drop everything you’re doing to go re-watch and pick up on all the little nuggets you may have missed the first time. Todd and Wes, thanks for giving me a greater sense of appreciation for film. Keep crushing it! Also, is a Tree of Life episode in the near future? - Alix W.

    Finally Found My Film Podcast
I’ve been looking for a quality film podcast for the past two years and happened to stumble upon the Pestle to prime myself for a re-showing of 70MM interstellar IMAX about a month ago. I was blown away by Wes and Todd’s analysis - bringing new insights and perspectives into a film I’ve seen 15+ times. Both guys approach film from similar but slightly nuanced backgrounds and views and it’s really reflected in the episode. You get insight on lighting, cinematography, acting, music, editing, composition, etc. etc. etc. Just a fantastic all around program, can’t wait until you get “real” sponsors! - Charlie L. (PS: NEED a Parasite episode)

    Additional lighting was worth it!
I’m a great cine-fan with little technical background and you guys took a movie (The Departed) that I slayed, despite the fun acting, for the plot hole of nobody figuring out who the moles were and make me want to elevate in my collection. Certainly inspiring for even more reviewing of that movie and your broadcasts! New fan!!!

    Love it
I'm always looking for a movie podcast, but it's difficult to stick to one, as the tone or the info isn't to my taste. I am thoroughly impressed with the podcast and have binged through all the shows currently up. Give it a download and enjoy!

Fills a gap that really needs to be filled.
There are countless great podcasts about filmmaking art and technique (Film Riot, The Artful Camera, Capturing Light) and there are countless great podcasts that review films (Now Playing, Mad About Movies). I have been looking for a podcast that marries the two. HOW do you use filmmaking art and technique to shoot well-told stories worth telling? The Pestle is that podcast. It's like a film discussion with your smartest friends, but with tehcnique disucssion from filmmakers and performance discussion from performers. Welcome to my rotation, The Pestle!!!

    Great story and production analysis!
Pestle dives into really thought-provoking story and character analysis but also gives great insight on how each film's production and direction. AND it's not boring! Best of all worlds. Keep up the good talk.

    Yesssss
These guys are fun to listen to. I don't see movies and entertainment from the perspective of an actor, filmmaker, etc. so hearing this commentary, deep thought, and banter is perfect. Looking forward to more.
