Straight A Nursing: Study for nursing school exams & NCLEX

1,047

In this show, Maureen Osuna, MSN, RN (Nurse Mo) breaks down a wide range of nursing school concepts so they’re easy to understand. Each episode aims to help nursing students improve their study techniques, pass nursing school exams, and feel more confident in clinical. If you’re nervous about nursing school, not “getting it” in lecture, or feeling overwhelmed with all the information you have to learn, this podcast will help you optimize your study time so you can learn more with less stress. While nursing school is challenging, it doesn’t have to be impossible. When concepts are explained in a way that “just makes sense”, nursing students have better recall on exams, feel more confident working with patients in clinical, and are better prepared for NCLEX.Nurse Mo understands the struggles nursing students face and draws on more than 11 years of clinical experience to make nursing school less intimidating. Each episode removes the “fluff” and focuses on the key things a nursing student (and nurse) needs to know about a variety of disease conditions. The show also provides tips for succeeding in nursing school, guidance for students and new nurses, and insider information to help you excel at the bedside.

    Great learning opportunity.
Nurse Mo does a great job of breaking down the subjects. She has companion episodes so you learn how hypo and hyper conditions compare and contrast. Very useful for nursing school.

    Nursing school ride along
I’m so grateful for nurse Mo! I’ve been listening to her since I started my prerequisites and I’m soo happy I stumbled upon this podcast. I have a long ride to my school and to clinical, so it’s nice to put it on and study a little extra. I’m an adult student (32) and was worried I’d be a little rusty getting back to studying but because of this podcast I’m kicking nursing schools butt. 7 months until graduation and the NCLEX for RN!

Helping me as an LVN student
Nurse MO, you are amazing! I’m an LVN student and your podcast are making my studies more enjoyable and easier to understand. Your knowledge is top tier and I appreciate your simplicity. You break terms and concepts down in a way that anyone can comprehend and apply. Your tips saved me! Thank you!!!!!

    Grateful
I am currently in my second year of nursing school, and I started listening to this podcast when I took my first med-surg class in my second semester. Let me just say that nurse Mo is an amazing human being for taking time out of her busy schedule to create such informative episodes. Whenever a topic is discussed in class, I search for a corresponding Straight A Nursing episode. This is such a life saver for reinforcing information while I’m dashing to my part-time job after lecture or deciding to change up my study environment by taking a walk outside. I cannot thank nurse Mo enough, and I plan to continue to listen to her once I become an RN.

    Tips for pediatric clinical
Worked in pediatrics as a nursing instructor for several years so I was very interested to listen to this particular episode but some of the information given was incorrect and/or misleading. 1)True, it is better not to tell young children about an injection that they are going to receive later in the day was a good point, calling it a “shot” is incorrect. Children today hear about shots as it relates to guns, so hearing that word can be terrifying. 2) The comment about medication doses was misleading. It sounded as though the doctor writes a medication order with mg/kg, and the nurse has to do the calculation to determine the dose. It is the doctor’s responsibility to order the exact dose, and the nurse’s responsibility to check the formulary recommendation (mg/kg) to make sure that the order is correct. 3) Re: mixing formulas: That is done in the hospital formula room under the supervision of a licensed dietitian. It is not a nursing function. If I were a nursing student about to start my peds clinical, this episode would scare me.

    MUST LISTEN
I love love love this podcast. I LOVED it during nursing school and love it now as a new grad. I listen to it still to refresh and learn more as I become more skilled. Nurse Mo keeps things simple and easy to understand.

    The Best!!
Extremely helpful for learning nursing concepts.

    Thanks for everything!
Nurse Mo! Just dropping by to say THANK YOU! This podcast has been absolutely invaluable to me during the last two years of nursing school. You were my commute buddy and study buddy and got me through so much test prep when I just couldn’t focus on reading anymore. As someone with ADHD and trouble focusing, having the option to listen to content I could trust made a world of difference. I’m actually getting a little misty as I write this because as of yesterday I passed the NCLEX and I am officially an RN! And you were such a huge part of my journey. Much love and happy summer! - Sabrina

Nurse Mo is the best study buddy!
I am forever thankful for you, Nurse Mo! I found your podcast when I was taking prerequisites for nursing school. Later, I took your bootcamp to prepare for my ABSN program. Your podcast and Studyshesh allowed me to enjoy walks with my dogs, without study guilt. You have a wonderful way of breaking down complicated topics into digestible information. I wanted to share the happy news that I passed my NCLEX! I’ll be sure to keep listening to your helpful content in my new grad journey!

    The Best Nursing School Podcast!
This podcast is an excellent supplement to my nursing school lectures. Nurse Mo explains concepts in a way that is engaging and easy to understand, and her LATTE method has been a lifesaver when it comes to studying! I always listen on my commutes to class and clinical, and it makes the driving time feel super productive. Thank you Nurse Mo!

    The best Nursing Podcast Ever!
Hi there, My name is Garrett. I was a paramedic for many years before changing careers in 2016 to healthcare emergency management and cybersecurity. I realized that I miss taking care of patients and that is my true calling. I am getting ready to apply for nursing school. I’ve been listing to your podcast to get prepared for nursing school! Paramedic is very different from nursing, some concepts are the same but I am learning a lot from your shows. Thank you very much for all you do. One small suggestion - on podcast 184 you recommended LastPass. I suggest making a note on the show notes about LastPass. I would be happy to share references but lately LastPass has had multiple breaches and incidents that makes the cybersecurity community to no longer recommend it. If you want I can provide some references to the incident and even write up an easy transition guide to switch to safer password managers to provide to your listeners. Thank you!

    nursing certification study tool
I’ve been a nurse for over a decade, but have been away from bedside care recently working in telemedicine and triage. I decided to obtain my MedSurg board certification but knew I needed to refresh on things before testing. Nurse Mo’s podcasts were one of the tools I used. I listened to dozens of her episodes. I am happy to say I passed the test and received my certification. Thank you so much for your help Nurse Mo!

i’ve been listening since i was in pre-requisite classes, and nurse mo helped me get organized and build confidence. now i listen to whatever subject we’re covering in lecture. she has a smooth calming voice (like a good nurse!) and has a way of breaking down the concepts so i can make the connections. this spring i plan to use her pod quiz episodes to help study for my boards.

    Best podcast ever
Nurse mo helped me so much throughout my prerequites and my ABSN. I am about to take my NCLEX and am still listening. Her planner was super helpful for organizing classes and assignments, and the study Sesh Podcast podcast helped me maintain somewhat of a school- life balance so I could get some fresh air and exercise without compromising crucial study hours. Thank you nurse mo!!!

Found Nurse Mo begining of nursing school. This podcast, study sesh and bootcamp made me a nurse. Thanks Nurse Mo! I listenend to you on my drive to school, clinical, work, even to the grocery store. I never used the book, just the syllabus and what I did not understand, I listened to on your podcasts. I haven't done Alegrbra in forever, and bootcamp saved my BUTT. You are truly a nurse of the best kind. Your selfless care of others and passion for helping is genuine. Thank you for pouring your heart and soul into all you do. And if you must know prettyskinny b is a joke (someone called me that behind my back at work and they made a name tag for me....so it's a joke....because I am not pretty, skinny or a "b" ....just me! Keep being you!

    Lip Smacking/Swallowing
I just listened to my first episode. The content is great and I want to listen to more episodes, but the mouth noises are just icky. Need a pop filter or post recording editing, something, anything, to smooth the sound.
  • AZDPUT
    Mouth Noises
I appreciate a nurse taking time out of her day to provide education (for free) and there’s nothing negative you can say about that. However, I have misophonia and I cannot stand the mouth noises and constant swallowing so it’s hard for me to concentrate when listening to her podcasts. It sounds like she has excessive saliva and the “tsk tsk” of her swallowing constantly makes it hard for me to fully enjoy these podcasts. Other than that, I am grateful for people who dedicate their free time to help us all learn.

My go-to podcast for nursing school
Nurse Mo has a great way of taking incredibly complex topics and breaking them down in a way that is understandable and entertaining. I always listen to her podcast on whatever topic is coming up in lecture to get a basic understanding of the concept before we dive in. Thank you for such a reliable resource!

    nursing school became fun again!!
Hello! I'm at the end of my second semester ADN, fourth semester BSN, and I have to say thank you! Nursing school was something I always wanted to do, but it's almost inevitable to avoid the burnout during finals. I've been listening to this podcast for almost a year now, and nothing has brought my passion back for the field quite like Nurse Mo! There's so much information not in your textbooks or slide shows, that are beneficial in and after nursing school. I am able to study during my commute, my self care time and while doing chores around the house! I have never done so well in clinical or in the classroom. So once again, thank you from me and all my fellow student nurses, especially my study group in my cohort for everything. We listen everyday!

How I survived my messy first semester of my RN program
I decided to go back to nursing school at 54. Although I have great organizational skills, I had no idea how much outside learning I would need to obtain to survive school. I found Nurse Mo in the middle of my first semester, and her podcast has carried me thru my RN program. Any time a new topic is introduced I check my Straight A nursing resources first. In addition to the regular podcast, I use STUDY SESH and her MED SURGE course. I love that I’m able to “study on the go” and that with a little bit of prep work, I can run errands, go to the gym, or go for a run without feeling guilty. I am currently 48 days away from graduating! I’m beyond grateful to have Straight A Nursing as a resource.👍🏼❤️

    Couldn’t do it without you!
I absolutely love the podcast! When I knew I was finally going back to school for nursing, I began listening to this podcast everyday for the year leading up to my entry into nursing school, sometimes listening to episodes multiple times. This helped tremendously to prepare me for nursing school. I am in my first semester and crushing nursing school because I am able to understand the concepts at a deeper level. I talk about you all the time with my class mates and recently purchased study sesh which has been even more helpful at solidifying the content I am learning and sharpening my critical thinking skill. Thank you Nurse Mo for an absolutely grade A study tool! (See what I did there 😂) Sincerely your study buddy, Greg

    Thank You!
Love this podcast! So helpful especially for nurses who have been out of school for a while.

    Thank you!
So grateful for this podcast! I did an ABSN hybrid program with very little instruction. It mostly consisted of book reading and I felt so lost, stressed, and afraid. Your podcast encouraged me, supported me, and cheered me on and now I am a nurse, though I still have a lot to learn. I hope you continue to help many more people on their journey! Thank you very much for the time and effort you put into this podcast and your nursing career!

Becoming a Nurse, Thanks to Nurse Mo
I found this podcast when I made a mid-pandemic career-change leap and started taking remote pre-requisites. Your podcasts brought A P to life and kept me inspired to stay on this path of nursing. I immediately felt like I was part of the nursing education community even when I was isolated and studying by myself. When I was accepted into an accelerated degree program, Crucial Concepts Bootcamp was a no-brainer. I followed the program and cruised into an intense ABSN with ease. No math anxiety! Crushed every medication exam! Now, I’m almost done with my degree and Study Sesh is the perfect review and refresher. I might not know what the next gen NCLEX has in store, but I can master the content with Study Sesh on repeat. I’m so proud to join this profession with you. I wish I could say I’m graduating from “Straight A Nursing University”, but I know I’ll be part of the SAN fam for the rest of my career. Thank You!

    Just my two pennies
I feel Nurse Mo hyped up everybody who hears the podcast, but it is kinda wishy washy. I have lots of experience as a CNA before I did nursing school, and this Podcast is for those with out any experience. She really does help out those with out any experience, so that’s a plus. It’s like she’s used all her money for her sound and effects to make it sound legit, but the content doesn’t leave me filling knowledge gaps about nursing school. The boot camp class I purchased and it just seems like too long of recordings on smaller topics in school that again, doesn’t fill knowledge gaps, but just is very superficial. I follow her pages and love the community behind her, however, through nursing school this Podcast really caters to those who never stepped into any healthcare field.

I love all Nurse Mo’s resources!
I started listening to straight a Nursing podcast when I was enrolled in prerequisites. It was great to have a head-start into the program after completing Straight A Boot Camp! I am now in my third semester and I love listening to a relevant podcast on the way to morning clinicals. It’s always a calming feeling to hear nurse Mo explain a topic and helps me feel more prepared. Thank you nurse Mo for all of your amazing resources. I just bought my second planner and it is definitely a must for any nursing student! I am going to take advantage of the Black Friday sale and enroll in study sesh! Thank you Nurse Mo! Anne (future RN)

    BEST PODCAST HANDS DOWN
Thank you sooooo much, Nurse Mo! I’m a year into my program and your podcast has helped tremendously. Between your boot camp, the podcast, and study sesh I’ve been able to tie everything together. You’re definitely a gift from heaven, and we appreciate you taking time out of your day to educate nursing students. Thank You!

    Fantastic!
I found you early 2020, and in all the chaos you were such a rock of information and a different way for me to digest the material. I loved listening while working in my garden. Tripling up on my use of time! I just passed my exit HESI and give you thanks for helping me get there! Next up… nclex! Woo

    Unbelievably valuable resource!!
This is by far the best nursing school related podcast that I have come across. I am so very thankful to have found Nurse Mo! I am a faithful podcast listener, and also a member of the Crucial Concepts Bootcamp & and I have a Straight A nursing school planner! I guess you could say I am feeling very prepared as I start my nursing school program!! But what I love the most about the podcast is how I feel that I am able to incorporate learning into so many other activities that I do on a daily basis. I do a lot of traveling by car right now and so I have been looking forward to it so I can fill that time with podcast episodes. I feel so confident and feel like I am starting my nursing program on such a solid foundation and I am so thankful!! The Boot Camp has been invaluable, and I feel so unbelievably confident with dosage calculations. I scored a 100 on my first try!! Thank you Nurse Mo for everything that you do and for all of the time that you put into your amazing content. I can’t wait to go through nursing school with you! Rebecca

    Extremely Helpful
Thank you Nurse Moe!!!! You have saved my nursing school career! I was about to quit nursing school a year ago when I failed my med surg 1 course by 1 POINT. I was so down. I turned on your podcast and I found an episode about encouragement during nursing school and it brought me out of my funk. I started listening to your podcast for every exam and to keep myself in the mind of a nurse during the summers. I am in my last semester now and just passed my cardiac med surg 2 exam with a 90%!! Thank you so much nurse Moe- you rescued me from failing nursing school!!!

    Chance favors the prepared mind
Nurse Mo, Thank you for supporting me through years of wondering if I should study nursing. I will be starting nursing school this summer! Your podcast is always with me. My youngest hums the opening tune omw to the bus stop. My 8 year old perks up for pod quizzes on our commute. I love the efficiancy of slaying mundane chores while learning how to navigate the world of nursing with valuable advice from someone that not only survived but thrived through it all. I'm confidently equipped to enact organizational and learning systems (LATTE/Brainsheets FTW) now and not after the tidal wave of school crests. I even shared the tips gleaned from you book with my teens. Thank you again for all your hard work so that I can work smart. Gotta go and fill out my cheery new planner courtesy of your ETSY store! I've got this because I have you!

    Nurse Mo is AMAZING!
Between the podcast and the planners, nurse Mo has prepared me for my college career. I was originally a nursing major (that’s when I started listening to the podcast) but I am now a Respiratory Care major. I still listen to the podcasts that apply (respiratory, organization, life) and use the planner. I have such an incredibly busy life and Nurse Mo makes it more manageable. Thank you so much!

I recently graduated my ADN program and I could not have done it without your podcasts giving me the support and guidance throughout the last two years. You will continue to be my number one podcast throughout my nursing career. Thank you for your dignity and strength and I’ll carry those words I have learned from you onto the floor and into the rooms.

I absolutely love this podcast. Thank you for sharing all of the important information that nurses need to know. I’ve been and LPN for 17 years and I’m now finishing prerequisites for my LPN-RN bridge program . It’s enlightening to learn new information and to gather tips through your podcast so that I can become a better nurse. I recommend your podcast to all nurses and nursing students I know . 😊

    A little bit of everything!
I love the format of this podcast. It’s not all content based about nursing school curriculum, it has real life stories and topics that go beyond education. I am looking to go into an accelerated nursing program and would love to hear more about that! Thanks for your podcast!

    Great podcast!
I listen to your podcast while I’m driving to clinical, or in the gym, and I love it! I also subscribed to the study sesh podcast and it has been beyond helpful! I am in my second semester of nursing school and I wish I had found these recourses sooner! Thank you for all the work you put into this material, I look forward to the new episodes each week! Nursing School Must Have!
I found Nurse Mo searching for nursing podcasts and I have been addicted every since. I sent her podcasts and website to any classmate who asks me how I understand something. It is broken down to understandable information and is a holistic view which we need with all of the information required to learn.

Feeling prepared thanks to Nurse Mo!!!
Thank you, Nurse Mo, for all of the resources, help, and support you offer! I’ve been listening to your podcast for a little over a year, and used this podcast to help me through A&P. With your help and a lot of hard work, I made a 100 in both lecture and lab for A&P 1 and 2!! So, I bought the CCB and Study Sesh and have started going through them slowly. I’m starting my RN program in August and I feel so well prepared to know that I have a good foundation for getting started thanks to you! Thanks again!!

    Exceptional!!
Listen to the podcasts while driving, walking, cooking, doing laundry, etc. Nurse Mo clearly and concisely explains a wide range of topics. Her guidance and advice is priceless! She conveys the feeling that she really cares about our success. There is no sense that she is just trying to get our money. Thank you, Nurse Mo!

    Nurse Mo is so encouraging
I am an older student and was clicking along well until Pharmacology . Since I have had a hate relationship with math , it didn’t bear well with the computation section . After failing it twice , I was questioning my ability . Listening to Nurse Mo gives me a glimmer of hope to start again !!
