Radiolab for Kids Presents: Terrestrials

by WNYC
829

Welcome, nature lovers, to the home of the Terrestrials podcast and family-friendly Radiolab episodes about nature. Every other week, host Lulu Miller will take you on a nature walk to encounter a plant or animal behaving in ways that will surprise you. Squirrels that can regrow their brains, octopuses that can outsmart their human captors, honeybees that can predict the future. You don’t have to be a kid to listen, just someone who likes to see the world anew. You’ll hear a range of nature stories on this podcast. Sometimes these will be brand new Terrestrials episodes, full of original songs (by “The Songbud” Alan Goffinski) that tell a fantastical-sounding story about nature that is 100% true. Sometimes these will be our very best, shiniest, furriest, leafiest Radiolab episodes about animals or plants or nature. The stories that drop here will always be family-friendly and safe for kids. They will always be sound-rich and full of the vivid, gripping storytelling you’ve come to expect from Radiolab. They will always transport you to the beyond-human world: into the depths of the ocean, into jungles, prairies, forests, space, snow, wildflower fields and beyond. Sometimes we’ll encounter something so wild we just have to break out into song about it! Don’t worry, good voices not required. Join us on this adventure!

    We LOVE this podcast!!
My son and I love Terrestrials SO much!! We’re thrilled you are back. My son requests to listen to Terrestrials nearly every time we are in the car and at bedtime to fall asleep to, especially “The Trio”. We’ve heard each episode of the first season MANY times and are excited to hear some new episodes. I’m so appreciative of all the work put into this podcast to make it fun, interesting, and educational that this is the first podcast I’ve become a member of to help support. We hope you’re around for a LONG time!!

My 7 year old daughter loves the new version
My daughter loves the songs, science and stories. Listens over and over again. We can’t find anything else comparable, please make more! (Of the newer version… she says the old version is boring)

    Language and sexual content
I consider myself a liberal mother but I do not curse (EVER) or speak of sex (outside of animal reproduction) . This podcast is not appropriate as it contains both and without warning. I’m not sure what age this is for unless you openly curse with your children.

    More PLEASE
I’m a longtime Radiolab listener, and I just discovered this podcast on a road trip. My 6 and 4 year loved it and I can’t wait to include it in my Middle School STEAM class. Thanks for including all the additional resources. WNYC please make more episodes - kids need science!

    Umm…
Hi, this is a really good podcast. So good that I watched every episode at least 5 times however… I am worried that it has ended because the last time they updated was January 11! And it is currently November. So good but needs to update. 😊

Amazing story telling. Amazing music. My 4 year sings the intro song louder than I do. This podcast is the “bestrial”. Love it.

We love these - but not as much as our kid!
We have listened to The Guardian and The Unimaginable about 20 times each thanks to our 5 year old! So great we love this show.

    So fun!
My kids (ages 4 and 8) love this podcast! They especially love episodes about animals (like the octopus and three eagles). We all enjoy listening together on car rides!

    More Terrestrials Please!
Our whole family enjoys Terrestrials show SO much. The format is very engaging, educational, and all-around fun. And the music breaks! Sometimes out of nowhere, one of us will sing “let’s take a break to consider that an octopus can eat a bird…” Please make a new season!

    Love it!!
The podcast is the best! I learn so much and the best part is you get to search for what you want. I suggest this for your childs and for you yourself!!🫠👩🏼‍🦳

    Fascinating and fun
Our whole family loves this podcast. It’s so refreshing to listen to a podcast aimed at kids and families that doesn’t talk down to kids, use silly voices, or engage in all the other antics of other kids’ podcasts. Please make more!

Best podcast for kids that I’ve found
My 6 year old is obsessed. She listens to certain episodes over and over again… octomom, behaves so strangely, tic tac toe, and most recently, The Water Walker. Over and over and over again! It’s also interesting for adults, which is really hard to find in a podcast. One reviewer pointed out that the newer version, Terrestrials, is sillier than the Radiolab for kids version, I agree with that. But it’s still nowhere near the level of other kid podcasts. I will say I don’t think the silly parts are necessary to keep kids engaged, but I don’t think it takes anything away either. I hope for many more seasons to come!

Radio lab for kids is an amazing podcast. It is just about the only podcast for kids in the world that’s not really goofy and silly. It’s like that because it’s the same content that adults listen to, the producers just pick out the most kid-friendly parts. However, Terrestrials is created specifically for kids, so it is really goofy and for little kids. I’m twelve years old and I don’t like Terrestrials because of this. So I one hundred percent recommend the Radiolab episodes but I wish Terrestrials wasn’t like this.

    This lady ruined Radiolab
A social justice journalist takes a swing at trying to influence children. Lulu was hand picked to transform radiolab from a show about science and wonder into yet another show about social justice (while for some reason retaining their science grants?) I think a writer who has so completely tanked a beautiful show like classic radiolab, shouldnt be given new opportunities. The situation gives new meaning to the phrase “failing upwards”

    Reading Rainbow meets National Geographic
Beautiful written episodes, quirky heartfelt host and simply entertaining science. How it doesn’t have thousands of five stars is beyond me. Listen to this!

Truly a family favorite for all ages
We were on an eight hour car ride home and we found this podcast while looking for another. This did not disappoint!! My 9 year olds, my 13 year old as well as my husband and I, were hooked!! After each episode we would look up anything we didn’t know about like the tsetse fly. So fascinating!! I highly recommend this podcast for all ages!!

Fun and informative—my brainiac 12 year old loves it
I thought it might be too young for him but he loves it. I like it too—fascinating topics, with something to learn whatever your age. Big should out to the music composer!

    Fantastic for kids and adults!
My seven year old requests Terrestrials for every car ride and I’ve learned so much too! It’s rare to find such an engaging show for both kids and adults. Bravo! We just need more episodes!
