True Crime #106

From the host that brought you The Band Played On, The Banned Teacher is a new investigation, in a different city. He says it was consensual sex. She says it was rape. He was her music teacher. She was a teen. And it wasn't just once, with one girl. He had sex with students in closets, classrooms, and cars. The Banned Teacher begins with one victim's search for justice but turns into a full investigation by host Julie Ireton. Warning: This series contains graphic descriptions of sexual assault To hear all 10 episodes now, sign in for free via CBC Listen or subscribe to the True Crime Premium channel on Apple Podcasts: apple.co/cbctruecrime

    Amazing podcast
The Band Teacher is an amazing and heart wrenching story. Anne Marie thank you for your bravery, thank you for speaking about your abuse. I honor all the women that have shared their journey.

    Excellent Podcast

    Excellent
An excellent podcast-interesting, professional, empathetic treatment of a difficult subject. Beautifully done.

    Irresponsible
I am sorry but I listened to this up until episode 4 when the attorney they were consulting with actually suggested that there be a lower standard of proof in sexual assault trial cases. That is such a reckless and uninformed thing to say, and for an attorney to be the one saying it, and for this podcast to actually punish that, is irresponsible.

    Amazing work
Julie is an absolute professional and a compassionate human being. These women are so courageous and being a woman who came of age in the 70’s I know about this. Different place and situation but same lack of protection. Doug Walker stole their innocence and gaslit them so they felt to blame and he was enabled by every adult who knew “something”. He’s a predator. A total predator.

    Stories like This
Are what the podcast medium exists to tell. And with every single person who listens, consciousness is expanded of the experiences of these victims at the hands of these monsters and of their courageous efforts, as CHILDREN, to bring them to the attention of the “adults” in charge, only to be ignored and to feel unearned guilt for the crimes against the girls that came after. Beautifully and sensitively told - absolutely mandatory listening.

    Powerful
What an incredibly powerful podcast! So many podcasts these days are exploitative and non-victim centered, but I think the subject material was handled masterfully. Would absolutely recommend! As a survivor, made me feel seen and really inspired by all these incredible women fighting for change through collective action.

    Binge worthy
This series was so sad to hear. I could tell the story really blew up and a sisterhood was formed as a result of this reporting. Episode 8 that featured punch daddy bright me to tears. He is so sweet. Start listening now. Glad to hear all these women have somebody to turn to now

    Outstanding and relatable
I was a victim of teacher sexual abuse at 15 - i reported him (he was sentenced to 5 years, served 20 months) only to also then find out there were other before me. I’ve repressed a lot since then, and this podcast has helped to remind me how strong I was to come forward and to start to understand the long term affects it has had on my life - the testimonies are very relatable - THANK YOU to those in the story and for creating this podcast - outstanding reporting!

    Great podcast
I listen to a lot of podcasts, especially true “crime”. This is close to the best, if not THE best I’ve listened to. Well-researched, thorough, and detailed. And, it prompted action , help, and change. Well done!

    I hate to say this…
Because this was such a great/well done podcast but I had such a hard time getting past Julie’s accent. The way she says OttaWAH, Tronno instead of Toronto, Muntreal instead of Montreal, rezourses instead of resources was so distracting. However, the content and investigative journalism was outstanding.

    Team Blipster!
This extremely well presented podcast is a therapeutic listen for anyone who has experienced the brutal isolation of childhood sexual abuse. Regardless of justice this unification of victims is wonderful. Thank you all for gently & gracefully sharing your stories of your trauma & your recovery & of finding each other. This podcast made me feel so many emotions. It has kept me sat in my car in the dark garage long after I had parked at home. When Sam the puncher first spoke I was at Target, airpods in ear & tears running down my face. So many of us female victims are fatherless & Sam is the Dad we all want. I escaped from London to Florida to flee my memories of abuse. I have so much respect to you ladies for all confronting yours. I think anyone who is not a child predator can agree that much more scrutinization into all laws regarding child abuse is required worldwide.

    Wow…just, wow
Regarding Season 2 (I have not currently listened to Season 1), I am so incredibly moved by this reporting of such powerful sisterhood. But I’m incredibly angered by the horrific series of events that lead these amazing women to each other. With that said, they must know that because of their courage, resilience, and alliance, people that matter are now paying attention to what matters most in any civilized society.

    To the blisters
I have dealt with sexual trauma the first 25 years of my life. Therapies, medications, hospitalizations and less positive coping mechanisms have been employed throughout. I have never felt an emotion where someone truly gets me. When I heard the ladies sharing their experiences I was blown away by the power of women sharing their stories and each would say that’s it-that’s what he’d done. They would then share the feeling they’ve carried all that time alone and realize there truly were others like me out there. Thank you for sharing your stories.

What happens when you run out of plots.
Spoiler: The tuba did it. No, not the tuba player, the instrument

    Well done!
All of the interviews of the people who shared their life stories helped me understand the lasting scars. I appreciated how well the whole podcast was put together and the kindness of Julie as a host

    Hits Close to Home
As someone that grew up in that city, attended public school at that time, and played in a school band, this podcast is incredibly eerie. Makes me feel like I dodged a bullet.

    Stop blaming victims
The power imbalance and huge age differences between these teachers and students makes it impossible for it to be anything but wrong and exploitative. How you can listen to these men and women (especially the women as they describe their experiences with Tim Stanutz) in such detail about the abuse and not believe it, is difficult to understand. Please imagine your daughter or granddaughter or sister or mother or wife going through such a thing and then try to day you think a 16 year old can understand what they are doing.

    Great storytelling
This subject matter is so difficult and I think the host handled it with a great deal of respect.

    Incredibly Necessary
I need to take a few moments to thank you all so very much for making this incredible work. This story is so necessary not only for “casualties” of teacher sexual abuse but for everyone. Everyone who is subject to schooling and every student needs to be informed about how necessary it is to speak up, to take action, to follow through regardless of how uncomfortable it can be. This is an incredible testament to those in power how taking action immediately will save countless people many years of strife (and money). I cannot say enough how grateful I am for this podcast. I really wish there was more to listen to. We need more information like this that normalizes speaking up and following through with action in order to protect kids. Thank you all so much for this therapeutic and informational action.

    Great Podcast
This was very well done . Hard to listen to at times but I highly recommend it .

    Great podcast
This is why every adult needs to speak up when they suspect, see, know or hear something. As adults we are the protector of all children not just our own. Invest the time to listen to this - outstanding reporting, investing and conversation with all who were victims in the case
  • Jack_McCoy
    Real journalism
Three pedophiles at the same school abused scores of kids, and it was covered up or ignored by a disinterested school administration, teachers and others in power. This show seeks justice for the victims. It is raw and brutal. Excellently narrated, great sound design, A+. It’s sad, but there’s hope here too. Listen to ALL the episodes.
  • RonsterBalmer
    Stick with it.
Honestly, much less biased than I expected. Thank you for reporting the facts. It took too long to get to the trials and connections between the men. I also have doubts with someone coming forward after reading about details in the papers. I am also on the fence about the episode “Crush.” She knew what she was doing- I sure as hell did at 16 in the early 1990s. Your statisticians need to remember that accusations, many of which are nowadays from spiteful youngsters looking to cause trouble or get revenge, should not be counted as instances of abuse.

    Outstanding
Absolutely outstanding reporting. It’s not just a telling of a story. You’ve changed the lives of those who were affected. Bravo!

Well researched, well told ... heartbreaking story told with compassion
CBC did a great job with this story. Produced well, narrated wonderfully and the care and compassion for all involved really showed. Heartbreaking but riveting. I binged all 7 episodes in a day. Well done, CBC.
