a beautiful blend of knowledge, passion and activism
this podcast is incredible. as someone who has transitioned into vegetarianism this year, it’s been delightful to dig into all the rich history, context, analysis and activism. the combination of all these aspects has mingled together to make a truly spectacular pod.

    Leared so much
I learned so so much just from one episode of this podcast, it was amazing! I just love the way Colleen conveys information because it is so deep, compassionate and meaningful but caries no judgment at all! Would highly recommend.

    Words Matter
I never thought learning about where words came from could be so entertaining. It’s also interesting to see that how we’ve come up with words has effected others in such profound ways. For example, masking what we call certain animal products makes (such as “beef” instead of “cow flesh”) it easier to consume them. Since starting this podcast and becoming vegan, I’m much more careful about the words I use and how it can impact others around me.

I really, really wanted to like this podcast…
I was really excited to find this podcast, being as I am, so infatuated with etymology and anecdotal history. However,I found it extremely difficult to get past the authors nauseatingly idealistic view of animals. I just found that her vegan bias found its way into nearly every other sentence and the constant sneering down her nose at us non-vegetarians only added to the droning nasal quality of her voice. I really, really wanted to like this podcast but it’s difficult to listen to someone who condescendingly weaves disdain for us carnivores with actual interesting Information. This podcaster would be the doctor who told you that she hated giving you the bad news about your cancer but you deserved it anyway because you ate so poorly, didn’t exercise properly, must have smoked at some time (please don’t lie to her with your bacon infused breath) and were probably just a bad person to begin with.

    A perfect podcast
I have loved language for as long as I can remember. I studied Chinese in middle school, moving on to Latin in high school before majoring in Roman Lit in college. The development of language has always fascinated me, and linguistics will forever be my passion. I recently made the choice to live a vegan lifestyle. It was a natural change for me, and veganism is now another passion of mine. This podcast perfectly blends two of my favorite things together. I also think non vegans would find this podcast absolutely fascinating. I can’t wait for more episodes.

Combining words, history, research and animals makes this podcast my go to when I'm looking for more education and wanting to understand why us humans have gotten to where we are. I am forever changed by Colleen's efforts and compassion. Animalogy is worth every minute. Don't walk, run to download it.

    A Great Education
I am so pleased that Colleen has expanded her podcast presence and is now offering this amazing new podcast. I love Food for Thought (her original podcast) and Animalogy is just as good. I have learned so much about the english language from listening. It is a really fascinating show and will be enjoyed by language and animal lovers alike.

    Unexpectedly Riveting
I have recently started listening to this podcast and I must say that I am hooked! Language is so powerful, and to learn the origins of so many words never given a second thought about is quite fun. I had to go back and download all the previous episodes so I can learn more. Great presententation of lots of information.

An Exemplary Example of Vegan Activism
As vegans, and as creatures whose voices are acknowledged (where other animals' are not), we have a responsibility to know the extent of our carnist indoctrination beyond our dietary habits. Language is the heart of the people. If we claim to have animals at heart, then, shouldn't our language reflect it? That starts with awareness, which Mrs. Colleen has taken time and energy to give us. Everything we learn could be the thing that finally convinces someone to make the connection and go vegan. Thank you, Mrs. Colleen, for sharing your time and energy to develop and inspire more vegan journeys, and doing so in an interesting, entertaining and accessible way. ☆

    Clever and Informative Podcast
I have been enjoying learning about the origins of so many words and how animals are involved in so much of our language. Colleen truly shines when she talks about the animal kingdom. I can feel her enthusiasm, love and compassion for all our animal Earth mates. Definitely worth checking out.

    Fascinating and insightful!
I've always loved language and the stories behind the words we use, and I've always been keenly aware of how we often speak without really thinking about what we're saying. And I've always loved animals. Colleen combines all of this beautifully into an insightful and fun exploration of the stories behind our words and how they reflect and shape our relationships with animals and the world around us.

    Helped me
Helped me get through the first stages of knowing the horrors of the meat industry. And that there is no such thing as a perfect vegan.

Words can't express how how much I love Animalogy!!
Colleen Patrick-Goudreau has done it again! Her Food for Thought podcast changed my life and now I get excited with every new episode of Animalogy! This podcast enriches my understanding of language and how we use/express words in our everyday life that reflect animals. From interviews with experts in the field to the constellations in the skies, Animalogy covers everything you need to know about how animals have shaped our language and way of life. And I thank you Colleen for being a strong and intelligent voice for the animals. Your podcasts help me everyday and you are a guiding light for everyone.

    Language Is Powerful
I love Colleen's original podcast, Food for Thought, so much. It was exactly what I needed when I started thinking about moving into a life that minimizes suffering for all sentient beings. In addition to Colleen's wonderful, comprehensive way of looking at the world through vegan eyes, and her ability to teach about every angle of a compassionate life, she is also an Anglophile and English major who understands and appreciates the origins of, and the power of, words. This new podcast is a fascinating look at words and how they relate to and are often derived from animal origins. Words in any language say a lot about the cultures that developed around them and in their company. I will listen through each one of these podcasts, and then return to listen again to make sure I have grasped every nuance.

Words Are Powerful & HBD Colleen!
I absolutely adore the Food for Thought podcast by Colleen so I will be the first to admit I was hesitant and maybe even a wee bit resistant to open myself up to the animalology podcast. Well let me just admit here before all of iTunes; I was wrong...way wrong. I am blown away by the content in this podcast. I had no idea the words...the many, many words humans speak on a day-to-day basis are related to and often derived from non-human animals. Colleen understands how important it is to frame euphemisms in a way that show their truth-however pleasant or unpleasant that may be. Colleen, at the heart of her work, is a [stellar] teacher. I always come away from her podcasts with information that gives me pause to consider my own impact in this world where animals are concerned. I relish both of Colleen's podcasts and find myself re-listening to content because they are highly informational, compassionate and empowering. I am a better activist because of Colleen's work. Many thanks to Colleen for cultivating her vision for this podcast in a tangible way. For the animals-seen and unseen.

    Life changer!
Colleen Patrick-Goudreau has been changing (and saving) lives with her Food for Though podcast for more than a decade! Animalogy is an amazing new addition to her repertoire. I have been shocked by every podcast and the sheer amount of knowledge and depth she provides about our speech and language. I've changed the way I speak and think, and I'm sure you will as well!

    Amazing Grace
Colleen has done it again with this new series exploring our values and attitudes towards animals that have been shaped over time through our speech. Her activism and passion and LOVE for being the change she wants to see in the world inspires me daily and I am so thankful for the gifts she contributes in this regard. My husband and I are blown away by the obvious amount of research that went into this series.

    For Word & Animal Lovers
Colleen Patrick-Goudreau continues her work of podcasting excellence begun in "food for thought" by peeling back the layers of history and usage in how English speakers talk about animals. As a lover of language and animals, I find this a fascinating and thought-provoking listen.
  • Dragonflye89
    A winning combination!
I have been looking forward to this podcast since it was announced! Animals and etymology magically put together and transformed into an educational and fun podcast. I never knew that some of the most common phrases we use relate to animals. Colleen is smart, funny, and above all compassionate; I appreciate all she does to educate people about living with our animal friends. Thank you!

All of Colleen's podcasts are amazing and this one is no different! Animalogy is thought provoking!

Language nerds & animal lovers will geek out
I love Colleen's podcast "Food for Thought," and as a writer and copy editor I've always enjoyed the language lessons she's sprinkled throughout it. (She recommended The History of English Podcast in the past, which led me to become obsessed with that as well.) So when Animalogy debuted I had high hopes, and I am definitely not disappointed. Colleen does meticulous research and is clearly so passionate about this subject. It's fascinating to learn so many etymologies and histories. Really a must-listen for anyone who loves the English language, thinks critically about the words we use, or wants to learn more about animals (and our relationship to them) in a new way.

    Excellent
Like her other podcast, Food for Thought, Colleen Patrick-Goudreau's Animology is fun to listen to and chock full of good information! I highly recommend listening to both podcasts! You'll never look at language or animals the same again! (Plus you'll want her to be your best friend. Don't say I didn't warn you.)

    Now I get it
I love Colleen. I love her perspective & the way she delivers it. I have learned so much in listening to her podcasts, about animals, food, health, the environment & how to handle myself as a fairly new vegan. She has inspired me to make amazing changes in my life that make me feel better both physically & emotionally. I used to think, like many, that vegans were dirty hippies, or attention seeking tweens (not that there's anything wrong with that). Colleen has taught me that there are so many reasons to respect & care about all living things & to respect myself enough to make changes that can effect my very soul. Have a listen & see if you can stop your self from becoming a fan of Colleen. I dare you.

    Phenomenal
Colleen is so knowledgeable and it is truly fascinating to hear her speak about the English language and where our idioms come from, what they mean, and how we can change them. I love being able to learn of the history, and I appreciate having this really brought to my attention so the use of my language is consistent with my actions. Love this podcast, and I love Colleen even more! ❤
