THE WAR, a seven-part series directed and produced by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, tells the story of the Second World War through the personal accounts of a handful of men and women from four quintessentially American towns. The series explores the most intimate human dimensions of the greatest cataclysm in history - a worldwide catastrophe that touched the lives of every family on every street in every town in America - and demonstrates that in extraordinary times, there are no ordinary lives. Throughout the series, the indelible experience of combat is brought vividly to life as veterans describe what it was like to fight and kill and see men die at places like Monte Cassino and Anzio and Omaha Beach; the Hürtgen Forest and the Vosges Mountains and the Ardennes; and on the other side of the world at Guadalcanal and Tarawa and Saipan; Peleliu and the Philippine Sea and Okinawa. In all of the battle scenes, dramatic historical footage and photographs are combined with extraordinarily realistic sound effects to give the film a terrifying, visceral immediacy. THE WAR will air over two weeks, beginning Sunday, September 23, 2007 (four nights the first week and three nights the second week) from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. (8:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on three nights).

My grandfather fought in the infantry and was hit in the leg. He passed away and now learning about World War 2 is the way I feel connected to him. I saw part of movie and enjoyed every part.

The Brilliance That is Ken Burns
Everything that Ken Burns puts his hands to is brilliant, this is his best work ever. For the first time, we get to see what it was like during WWII on the homefront, what it was like for American families, staying at home to work and to worry. The perspective of looking at what happened through those who waited gives us history we have never seen. But most brilliant is Ken Burns treatment of what it was like for African American soldiers and marines who came home to find the racism that they had fought overseas to destroy. Ken Burns puts a healing hand on the story just by revealing the racism in film. We cannot change the past, but by revealing the stories we can begin to make change. I never see a Ken Burns film without thinking---I hope this guy lives to be 175 years old so he can use his talent to show us what was behind the American history pages.

    Finally understanding
My father,PFC Loren Shiflett, Co "B", 4th Amored replacement battalion, rarely spoke of his experiences during the war. He spent January of 1945, in Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge and later on moved through into Germany and Czechoslovakia. I finally understand why he was reluctant to share his experiences, the emotional trauma he and all the others endured was something he didn't want to re-live. Ken Burns has captured the emotion, of what this war was all about.

    Great Episodes
We must know our history in order to improve and this is a big part of it. It is wonderful that you were able to get personal accounts of events. We as Americans’ need to remember that these freedoms we love came at a cost. Thank you again and I look forward to more episodes like these. Thank you

    Stunning
I daresay I shall definetly be watching this when it is finally on TV. I am waiting with baited breath hoping that this podcast isn't a built up version showing only the best parts. This is something that, I believe, will be worth watching.
