Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom

Jules is a young man, barely a century old. He's lived long enough to see the cure for death and the end of scarcity, to learn ten languages and compose three symphonies...and to realize his boyhood dream of taking up residence in Disney World.Disney World! The greatest achievement of the long-ago twentieth century. Now in the keeping of a network of "ad-hocs" who keep the classic attractions running as they always have, enhanced with only the smallest high-tech touches. Now, though, the "ad-hocs" are under attack. A new group has taken over the Hall of the Presidents, and is replacing its venerable audioanimatronics with new, immersive direct-to-brain interfaces that give guests the illusion of being Washington, Lincoln, and all the others. For Jules, this is an attack on the artistic purity of Disney World itself.Worse: it appears this new group has had Jules killed. This upsets him. (It's only his fourth death and revival, after all.) Great book
This is one of my favorite books I can remember reading. It has so much creativity and keeps me coming back for the next episode.

    A little too much background
This story was pretty awesome conceptually. I still think about parts of it and how concepts from the story could be integrated in modern society. But I feel the story wasn't succinct enough. However, I feel the same way about Atlas Shrugged, and I know many people who loved that book. So I say, if you like stories with revolutionary ideas, give this one a whirl.

Not the best, and yet? The Best!
It's not the best but, if you have read the book it's worth it. I love Cory Doctorow books. They are odd, weird, and most of the time they don't get what I want done. They get me thinking though. I love them. They are aweful and awesome. Awesome books. I am so glad that I am going to get to listen to one of the books in audio. AWESOME!!! This was my first! Welcome to the Magic Kingdom!

    UGGGGG.....
I was intrigued by this take on WDW in the future. I would have been more impressed if it had been condensed into one episode. The narrator makes me want to dig out my eyeballs with a spoon. THe author clearly has a lot to say, has a great backlog of knowledge about the parks and Imagineering and enjoys his characters - as pedestrian as they are. I think some of the visuals were really cool. Especially his character Zed. If you're a die-hard Disney fan, check it out while you're multi-tasking.
