Alright Mary: All Things RuPaul's Drag Race

936

Alright Mary is two parts Drag Race viewing party, one part queer studies lecture and a healthy dose of obscure pop culture references, all wrapped in a nuanced layer of dad jokes and pun-offs served weekly with a side of piping-hot tea.

    Missing Dragula recaps
I love this show - the dynamic between the hosts is great and it’s typically a very intelligent and funny conversation. But I am really missing your Dragula recaps. I hope you will decide to start covering season 6!

    uhh…
how do they talk so long and yet barely any of it is about drag race

    Elder Mary here!
I got the Geraldine Ferraro reference, and I loved it!

    What happened?
I used to love this show. It was part of my essential post-drag race listening but now it feels like they (especially Colin) don’t enjoy anything on the show anymore? Or at least don’t get excited about it the way they used to. It’s like Colin would rather go on random tangents than talk about the show now. I love tangents but sometimes he’ll go on one to avoid talking about something that often Johnny is excited about. Hope it gets back to normal soon :/

Probably my favorite RPDR review experience - the NUANCE

    Huh?
First, I do enjoy both of you. But what are you two smoking! Fantasia is a hot mess. Not horror, not edgy, not interesting…should have gone home 2 weeks ago. This whole cast is so weak…boring season! The only one more irritating than JayKay is that bearded Blackberry! Acted like they were producing the whole season… the Brothers were taking notes from them (apologies…I don’t want to misgender). Painful!

    Love the Hosts
I’ve listened to the show for years, and while I often suffer from drag fatigue and I don’t watch Dragula, it’s just to nice to hear these two friends connect!
  • Chafires
    Obsessed
Has me cackling laughing and thoroughly enjoying myself every episode. Calling out nuances I wouldn’t notice, providing lighthearted but also important commentary while being a thoroughly enjoyable show

Listening for years but I can’t anymore
I really love these two, truthfully. However I just have to stop listening because I’m so tired of their idea that *everything* in RPDR and now Dragula is produced and nothing is real. This has been building steam with them for years now, and it bums me out. Clearly there is actual production going on with these shows however not to the extent they seem to believe. Occam’s razor: is it more likely these shows are scripting lines and faking scenes (and in the case of Dragula, fright feats, etc) between non-actors or is it just reality TV and people act the fool (girl) in front of cameras? It’s enough to make me unfollow at this point. Thanks for the years of entertainment, I have helped support them on Patreon for periods of time even, but I just can’t with the “fake news” mentality that has gotten into them. It must come with the territory of watching too many of these shows but still. Sometimes people just act how they are and cameras film it! shocker.

    Encyclopedic knowledge of Drag Race!
If you want to hear an intelligent conversation about Drag Race, this is it.

    TROG!
I’ve been listening for years. Love all of the inside jokes, and musical allusions. The hosts are clearly passionate and considerate of multiple perspectives. I frequently listen to the hosts reviews/discussions of media I’ve never seen. That’s no easy task! Will gladly listen along to whatever topic they decide to explore.

    Thoroughly enjoy these two!
I love listening to these two. They are joyful, informative, and real!

    5 stars…but the Cindy erasure
All this Marcia and Jan stannery…but what about Cindy?

    LA Hater
Host is obsessed with Hollywood but hates LA. Go figure. Also thinks “quinceanera” is an exotic reference lol. Very know-it- all New Yorker who never leaves the island vibes.

    “Very funny Pomara”
Love the pod cast. So great to have recapped Dolores Claiborne one of my favorite movies. I also enjoy the international Drag Race shows a lot. Enjoy the banter and tangents!

Great podcast but why no episodes?
I love this podcast but disappointed that every episode the last few months is only a 15 minute preview and all the content is on Patreon. Would love some content on the main feed as well again.

    Best recap show ever
Love you boys. I’ve been listening for years and always look forward to your episodes every week! Hopefully you’ll do videos soon?????

    Incomparable content
Alright Marys, I have been on the hunt for a long time for a podcast that successfully and intelligently unpacks the many layers that RuPaul gives us in every season of drag race. Colin and Johnny bring you right into the conversation and into jokes on the first listen. Came for the recaps, stayed for the references, became a matreon when my area code was mentioned.

    Get into this!!
I’m so late to the party Mary! I just came across this pod mid-AS7 and I was immediately charmed by these two Marys. They make you feel like you’re right there with them talking about your favorite show. So positive, so real, and unafraid to tackle the tougher topics with honesty and a generous heart. After AS7 I went back to re-live past seasons via this pod and Mary, it’s been worth it! Their empathy for the Ru girls through the seasons has warmed my heart many times and honestly sometimes feels like empathy for me. Maybe that’s silly, but still, I’ll take a warm feeling where I can get one. I have joined in their infectious laughter time and again. Not me getting misty!! Officially the BSA of podcast reviews. Thank you Mary!!!

This pod’s born naked and the rest are drag
The pinnacle of Drag Race commentary. Always such a highlight of my week, hearing my good Mary’s gush and sometimes fight about Ru and the doll’s latest antics. Smart, and unafraid of criticism.

    THE Drag Race Podcast
I don’t have any friends who love drag or drag race the way I do, so whenever I finished an episode, I immediately listen to a couple podcasts so it feels like I have someone to process the episode with. This is the only one that I listen multiple times (I know, I spend a lot of time alone). I discovered these mary’s in 2020 and they really got me through a tough time with their passionate discussion of details and genuine love for the show. It’s clear that these guys are brilliant, sensitive, and pour so much of their hearts into this. Talk about nuanced discussion filled with culturally rich tangents. I’m an immigrant, so I have no knowledge of most of their references but I’m still entertained. Don’t even get me started on the ongoing RuPaul Charles Middle School fantasy fiction! I recently decided to become an Only Mary on their Patreon and just binging lots of episodes. So much so that my elderly immigrant mom thinks Colin and Johnny are my friends because she hears their voices and my cackling all the time. She’s still not too sure why I “hang out” with these gentlemen from the internet I never met so much but she’s happy that they bright so much light to my life.
  • j0j0ceo
    Always the same and predictable
Every season of drag race that they review is the same point of view with some typical shade thrown in and who has the biggest “bird”. Or a shady comment on how bad someone’s drag is. Everyone I’m entitled to an opinion but when you don’t even do drag full time how can you be so opinionated. It’s funny for a few episodes but this it’s just the same.

My one-stop shop for nuance and nonsense
So thankful to have this podcast to think through all the nuances of drag race and drag media that no one in their right mind would ever bother to consider. Sash Colby has me in stitches every single time - never change, Marys!

    They feel like friends <3
Over the years I have really grown to love them a lot. As someone with ADHD and hyper focuses on little nuances myself, I really feel like they are my people! I love nerding out along with them about tiny nuances that they have picked up on in queer culture over the years. I often catch myself saying “omg i love that someone else noticed that too, I thought it was just me!!!!”. Many non-drag queen Drag Race podcasts are unnecessarily mean and are largely uniformed, but both Collin and Johnny are extremely thoughtful, self aware, and intelligent people and so the shade that they do give from time to time is always fun instead of rude. You always leave an episode feeling good and also thinking about new angles that you may not have thought about before about any given subject. Love y'all <3! - Nicci from Portland

    Something is off...
So I used to love this podcast SO much, but it feels like something has shifted in the last few seasons. Maybe I'm projecting, but the vibe between Johnny and Colin just seems a little different. IDK. I still listen, but it's sometimes in the background now. AS6 has been tough because of the over the top TKB stanning (and I'm a fan of hers!). I know Johnny was very transparent on episode one about this...but it's still A LOT and there is zero objectivity there. It's a wee bit off putting.
  • @jwmtalley
    The STANDARD
THIS is the gold standard because it’s not just a recap but you guys are picking the moments that NEED to be talked about more. It’s like you guys are analyzing the moments of production and emmy-winning performances that make this show what it is. It’s real and it’s cutting edge reporting.

    I just love yall
TEAM TKBBBBBB!! I got so giddy seeing the pop up notification on my phone: “alright mary has added a new episode”. 🥰

    If you know...then you know
A podcast for Mary's by Mary's. Did I need a 20 minute aside reviewing all the micromoments of Alexis Mateo staring at her nail? No. Did I want it? Absolutely. But be warned dear reader, this podcast is not for everyone. There will be no linguistic death drops or shablam oration. But they are always on point...much like DiDa Ritz shutting it down at The Scorpio Charlotte.

A highlight of my week, every week!
This podcast is absolutely incredible! I really appreciate all the laughter, thoughtfulness, and insight that Johnny and Colin provide. It makes me watch queer media through a new lens every time! Truly cannot thank them enough for making this amazing content.

    The struggle is real
Is this a podcast about drag race or the delusions of 2 friends perception fo what people are interested in listening to? There use to be moments that felt genuine and listenable. However, it just feels like a struggle now and make it through the end. Everyone has different taste and I had to unsubscribe for mine.
  • MissJennyFur
    The BEST recap
Incredibly honest and hysterically funny, Colin and Johnny never fail to make me laugh and think more critically about the (beedie beedie) show RPDR. Also, become an Only Mary for the Only Mary realness only they can serve!

A must listen!!! My fav post show podcast!!
I love the in-depth conversations from a viewer perspective! More than just recapping it’s a deep dive that makes me feel like a Kiki with my own Marys! Adore you two!!!❤️

    I look forward to Sundays
I look forward to Sundays to listen to my favorite podcast that reviews RPDR. I’ve listed for years and I was sitting here today and wondered why I haven’t reviews it. Your take on the show is unique, fun and always on point. Thank you Mary’s for everything you do. Sister Mary Drew.

Drag race podcast that got outcompeted
This used to be my go to listen after drag race. But after race chaser, drag her, and sibling watchery came out this podcast is unable to keep up. The hosts sound fun but their lack of knowledge in comparison to ACTUAL drag performers is obvious. Their references are outdated and misplaced, and their idea of what drag is seems small minded.
  • Mac2987
    Fun, informed, and deliciously addictive.
Colin and Johnny bring drag race to life on this podcast in a fun and entertaining way. They deliver this drag race recap with a passionate, whimsical and lighthearted approach that will leave you laughing and appreciating the wonderful nuances of drag race culture. If you are going to listen to any podcast about RPDR, this is by far the best one as it highlights the perfect balance of camp, humor, entertainment and reality show drama we all love. This podcast is definitely the pizza queen of drag race recaps... and Mary, it’s enjoyable every single time!

Romper room... you know the rest
This used to be one of my favorite podcasts but it’s a challenge to get through an entire episode lately. It’s clear that the hosts are lovely people who have a lot to contribute to the drag race conversation, but I find myself skipping huge segments when they go off on tangents and laugh hysterically at their own inside jokes. I would love to return to this podcast if they could stay focused on the topic but it’s exhausting to sift through all the nonsense to find the worthwhile content. I appreciate the the podcast has a focus on social justice issues and problems specific to the queer community, but there’s also a lot of hypocrisy on display. For example they will discuss societal ideals of beauty and how these ideals are represented by the pit crew, and then in the next breath say which ones they find the most attractive. It’s too exhausting, Mary.
